(3x75cl) 2016Jeb Dunnuck (99)
The 2016 Le Desir checks in as 82% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, and 6% Malbec. Readers looking for world-class Cabernet Franc should beg, borrow, or steal to get hold of a bottle of this. Incredible floral, violet, forest floor, lead pencil, and cassis notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied red that’s flawlessly balanced, has ultra-fine tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. More intellectual and elegant than the La Joie, it’s still a wine of incredible intensity and class that builds incrementally on the palate, has an exotic, singular character, and the class to evolve for 30 years or more.Inc. VAT£980.42 -
Vinous (94-97)

Classic Cabernet notes of cassis, tobacco, and chocolate all emerge from the glass, and it has ripe tannins, no hard edges, and the purity that’s the hallmark of the vintage front and center. Intense graphite with fresh lavender, thyme, rosemary and blackcurrant notes. Hints of decadence. Iodine and mussel undertones. Full-bodied with superb intensity and silky tannins that grow on the palate, showing great length that goes on for minutes. Truly great depth. 77% cabernet franc and 23% cabernet sauvignon. Best ever. 4,800 cases made. This needs five to seven years to come together. Drink from 2029.Inc. VAT£596.38 -

James Suckling (100)
A compact and polished Cobos with lots of dark fruit, as well as green olives, flowers and stems. Raspberries and forest fruit, too. Full-bodied, very tight and compressed. Melted tannins give great presence and mouth-feel, but the feeling is that they are invisible. It goes on for minutes. Sensational. So sophisticated and thoughtful. An archetypal malbec from Argentina. Better after 2027.Inc. VAT£571.19 -

At only 400 cases, the first version of the 2021 Malbec Cobos was created in 1999 from grapes in Lujan de Cuyo from the first grower estate Hobbs worked with, next to what is now the Hobbs Estate. The grapes now come from the Hobbs Estate in Lujan and the Chanares Estate in Valle de Uco. Separate lots are fermented 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels, resulting in an outstandingly delicious, memorable, and complex layering of soft texture, floral violet, and high-toned blueberry and blackberry fruit. The structure is formidable, but ultimately there's something very ethereal and brooding about this wine that makes it stand out most of all. Aging potential is 20-30 years, if not more.Inc. VAT£571.79 -
Vinous (93+)
(14.8% alcohol; from ten-year-old vines on sandy soil with a lot of big stones; aged in 65% new oak; Vignoni describes this as a more rustic site surrounded by countryside, with a lot of native herb influence; production was just three tons per hectare in 2015). Saturated ruby. Very primary nose dominated by a stony quality. Highly concentrated and extremely primary, offering flavors of blackberry, blueberry, violet, licorice, wild herbs and lightly fusel crushed rock (Vignoni described this note as water on hot rocks). Finishes with an impression of medicinal reserve and slowly building length. This juicy but youthfully imploded wine, which carries a relatively low pH of 3.4, finishes firmly tannic and needs time to expand in the bottle. There's no easy sweetness here.Inc. VAT£133.73 -

Vinous (92)
(14.5% alcohol): Bright full ruby. Sexy, higher-pitched aromas of black raspberry, mocha and leather convey a distinctly wild element. Complex, soil-inflected flavors of dark berries, leather, coffee and mocha. Sweet, suave, highly concentrated wine with a silky texture and firm but ripe, harmonious tannins. Another couple years of bottle aging should be rewarded.Inc. VAT£358.40 -

This is really shows old vine character with black tea, bark and mushroom to the blueberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Full body. Round and soft yet tight. From 100-year-old vines. Drinkable but better after 2024.Inc. VAT£133.46 -

Vinous (90)
(14.6% alcohol): Saturated ruby. Deeply pitched aroma of chocolate truffle conveys a port-like, almost raisiny ripeness. Then large-scaled, thick and sweet in the mouth, with the strong chocolate quality dominating. This downright confectionery Malbec will be a crowd-pleaser among fans of the style but I find it a bit heavy, in need of more energy and lift. I see no reason to hold off on drinking this as it's unlikely to become more interesting with bottle age.Inc. VAT£121.32 -
