Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Indulge in the prestige of the Domaine Fabien Coche Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or 2022. As an extraordinary example from Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, this fine white wine presents a harmonious balance of richness and minerality. Grown in the exemplary Goutte d'Or vineyard, its Chardonnay grapes thrive in limestone-rich soils, preprocessing a distinct and luxurious terroir expression. Domaine Fabien Coche, a family-run estate since 1973, implements traditional viticulture and winemaking methods to honour the vineyard's grand lineage. The wine undergoes fermentation in oak barrels and remains on lees for 12 months, leading to a vivacious, full-bodied palate. Emanating aromas of pear, honey and toasted nuts, this Meursault 1er Cru enchants with its elegant complexity and opulent finish. The Domaine Fabien Coche Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or 2022 captures the quintessence of Meursault, delivering an unparalleled wine experience to the discerning palate. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)(5 Star Wine) This has not fallen clear after a recent lees stirring. Jadot stir their Grands Crus twice after the fermentations, once each in summer and autumn. There is significant weight as you would expect, almost a monolithic block, a little citrus, both lemon and lime. Impeccable length. This requires significantly more ageing but should join its fellows on the podium. Drink from 2034-2040+. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Bienvenue-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is quite backward on the nose and demands a bit of coaxing. Eventually, it reveals red apple, lemon verbena and light petrichor scents, though I would not describe it as "intense." The palate is well-balanced and elegant in style. It is not a powerful Grand Cru, but crisp, precise and almost delicate towards the finish. I suspect it will gain more weight by the time of bottling. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru takes time to settle in the glass. The exuberant bouquet has brambly red berry fruit, briar and a tang of shucked oyster shells, gaining intensity in the glass, though it doesn't quite match the precision of the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite muscular in style as it approaches its bold finish. Very good length and impressive power, yet my affection lies with the Clos-de-Bèze this year. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (92-94)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Caillerets 1er Cru has a very endearing bouquet, the best of Jadot's Chassagne cuvées, yellow plum and custard cremes, orange pith and a touch of blackcurrant leaf. The palate is certainly the most elegant and refined, crisp and detailed, with a harmonious, peachy finish dragging you back for another sip. Excellent. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)Medium deep colour, with dark flowers on the nose. Coming in the midst of various spectacular grands crus, I find that the Echezeaux has taken the sunshine to a slightly brutal degree, as reflected by maximum ripeness of the fruit along with some tannins that may have been blocked from maturing fully. The yield was lower which is not always the best thing in hot dry years. It is still a sound wine but has missed out on the more delightful side of 2022. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru, which comes from the Chassagne side, also showed some of the barrel on the nose like the Chevalier, but overall, it seems more primal and less terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with a resinous entry, surfeit with extract, though I am seeking a little more finesse and mineralité on the finish. A little broad-shouldered at the moment. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru is showing a little more oak than other cuvées, though it marries well with the fruit, touches of menthol percolating through with time, quite lively and precocious. The palate is well-balanced and quite intense on the entry, with orange rind and subtle peachy notes. It builds nicely in the glass and fans out with a sense of brio on the finish. This will be difficult to resist when young. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru is very ripe and almost ostentatious on the nose with its plush red plum and fresh figgy scents. Maybe just a little over-ripe? The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, saturated tannins. This is a "big" Volnay, with plenty of "rondeur" with a welcome pinch of cracked black pepper enlivening the finish. If you're not bothered about elegance, this may suit you, though I might err toward the excellent 2021. |

Burghound (89-91)(Outstanding) A subtle but not invisible application of wood sets off equally fresh aromas of red currant, earth and a whisper of the sauvage. There is a beguiling sense of energy to the delicious if not particularly dense medium weight flavors that retain good detail on the notably more complex, structured and lingering finale that displays better overall balance. |
