Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The sugar has not quite been fully fermented out. Production is two new 350l new barrels and one wine globe of 220l. The bouquet is really attractive, the fruit having eaten the wood. Not so much on the palate, where some oak remains alongside the fresh plums, and you can see the touch of sugar though under 2g/l remain. Drink from 2027-2035.In Bond£675.00 -

One new 350 litre barrel. Fresh mid lemon colour. Some energy on the nose but not enough detail as yet. Quite a significant volume on the nose, a sunny style of white fruit, good potential here given the concentration of the fruit. Drink from 2028-2036.In Bond£785.00 -

2022 is the last year where this blend of all the Puligny terroirs will include the 1ers crus. This does seem to build on the individual qualities in a good way. 950 litres have been made in all. Pale lemon colour. Oddly enough, the oak shows a little more – it has been made in one new 350 litre barrel and one from the previous year. Notwithstanding, there is a superb quality of fruit on the palate, still with this abundance of oak, but probably able to stand up. A wave of additional orchard fruit arrives, to complete the finish. A mentholated top note is present on the aromas of exotic tea, white flower and discreet spice wisps. Just a faint green tint. The bouquet is the finest of the range to date because the most nuanced with fruit taking the lead over the oak. Juicy on the palate, a little toast from the oak but minimal, and a good concentration towards the back of the palate which does also show just a trace of oak. But all the components are there to make a fine village Puligny. Note the detailed, lingering finish. Drink from 2027-2032.In Bond£465.00 -

Pale colour with a light green touch. A little more phenolic than Au Paupillot today. Quite a lot of weight to the white fruit, but with a bitterness behind which also suggests a more phenolic wine.
