Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Not quite as deep a purple and the nose is a little more refined, less exuberant. There is no shortage of quality fruit on the palate, dark raspberry, a few more tannins, but they are ripe enough. The fruit covers the final structure very nicely. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A crisp clear purple. The nose is a little more exuberant than Lavières, perhaps going to a slightly darker riper fruit, with happily enough acidity. Just a little more rustic in the tannins. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2023.In Bond£1,000.00 -

Burghound (92)
(from a .39 ha parcel; 100% new wood). Once again there is just enough wood lurking in the background of the ripe aromas of poached plum, dark currant, forest floor and an abundance of earth nuances. The super-sleek and intense larger-bodied flavors possess both fine detail and plenty of minerality that adds a sense of lift to the youthfully austere and lingering finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Patience advised here as well.In Bond£1,426.00 -
Burghound (89)
(from .57 ha parcel in Charmes proper). A wafting, ripe and airy nose is also trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The succulent, round and equally seductively textured flavors contrast markedly with the somewhat chewy though not really hard finish where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. In Bond£760.00 -
Burghound (91)
(from a .21 ha parcel). A perfumed if distinctly earth nose somewhat grudgingly reveals its nose of red and dark currant and, interestingly for Clos de Vougeot, exotic tea wisps. The succulent, round and relatively supple middle weight flavors conclude in a youthfully austere, firm and compact finale where touches of warmth and wood eventually emerge. Like several wines in the range, this could use better depth so plan on holding it for at least the mid-term.In Bond£1,221.00 -
(12x75cl) 2022Burghound (88)
A more deeply pitched nose freely displays its aromas of plum, dark cherry and prominent earth scents. The delicious and vibrant if again somewhat lighter weight but agreeably textured flavors deliver good length on the sneaky long and balanced finish that would also benefit from developing more depth. In Bond£1,000.00 -

Burghound (91)
(from a .64 ha parcel). This is just sufficiently reduced to recommend decanting it for 20 to 30 minutes first if you’re going to try a bottle young. Otherwise there is fine volume to the caressing if powerful medium-bodied flavors that exude a prominent bead of minerality on the youthfully austere, firm and balanced finale. This is always the case with any competent example of LSJ, this will need up to a decade of keeping to arrive at its apogee. In Bond£484.00 -
Burghound (91)
(from a .81 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). There is plenty of sauvage character suffusing the more expressive nose of mostly red berries and discreet floral wisps. The generously proportioned if not particularly dense medium weight flavors also possess a succulent mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the youthfully austere, firm and compact finale that displays fine length. In Bond£445.00 -
Burghound (89)
(from a .46 ha parcel). A discreet if easily discernible dollop of wood is present on the spicy nose of wild red berries that are nuanced by hints of the sauvage, spice and newly turned earth. The succulent and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess better mid-palate density thanks to the old vine sap that also serves to buffer the punchy, saline and firm finale. This is also a very good Gevrey villages and one to consider if you have the patience to cellar it for at least a few years. In Bond£322.00 -
Burghound (89)
(from a .86 ha parcel). This is aromatically similar to the Jeunes Rois but with slightly more prominent sauvage influence. The succulent and vibrant medium weight flavors aren’t quite as dense but possess a seductive texture that continue on to the dusty and long but not especially rustic or austere finale. This slightly firmer effort is also quite good for its level and also worth a look.In Bond£241.00 -
Burghound (89)
(from Brochon). A whiff of herbal tea can be found on the ripe but fresh aromas of forest floor, red currant and a hint of the sauvage. The supple, round and delicious middle weight flavors possess slightly better volume while exuding a subtle minerality on the moderate austere, lingering and well-balanced finale. One to consider as this is lovely. In Bond£548.00 -

Burghound (92)
(from .42 ha parcel in Mazis-Haut). A more restrained though more layered nose reflects notes of various dark berries, newly turned earth and plenty of gamy sauvage character. The rich, generous and reasonably concentrated medium weight flavors also exude evident minerality on the solidly powerful and impressively long finale. This does however need more depth so I strongly advise holding this in reserve for at least 5 to 7 years first. In Bond£1,003.00 -
Burghound (90)
(from Clos Baulet and Clos des Ormes). Here too there is just enough wood surrounding the pretty aromas of red currant, cherry and violet to merit mentioning. Once again, the middle weight flavors aren’t especially dense but they are attractively, even seductively, texture while displaying solid depth and persistence on the moderately firm finale. In Bond£298.00 -

(from 3 different parcels that total 1.85 ha). This is the most floral wine in the range with a huge array of such elements adding elegance to the poached plum, dark currant, smoked game, exotic tea and moderate wood aromas. The gorgeously textured, mineral-driven and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a Zen-like harmony on the superbly long, complex and built-to-age finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is potentially spectacular and a wine that should amply reward 15 to 20 years of aging. In Bond£1,000.00 -
