Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

(from an appellation standpoint, this .64 holding in Le Clos is part of the 1er Les Perrières and will be noted as such on the back label). Moderate wood sets of similarly smoky aromas of white orchard fruit, lychee and citrus confit. The notably finer and sleeker medium weight flavors terminate in a longer and more complex finish that possesses a lovely textured. This is quite good and worth checking out.In Bond£245.00 -

Lemon and lime colour. The class and intensity of the vineyard is becoming apparent now it has had a few months in bottle. More reserved of course than the 1ers crus, with a little almond paste sitting on top of the orchard fruit. Attractive flesh up front on the palate, but clearly much more in reserve, still with a youthful bitterness that the 2023 probably will not have. Jacques likes his 2020 even more but otherwise is very keen on this Bienvenues. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2024.In Bond£1,000.00 -

The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Champs Canet 1er Cru has a delightful bouquet of beeswax, chai, Mirabelle and crushed stone that unfolds in the glass. The palate is fresh and edgy on the entry, with quite a keen, tensile line of acidity and a slightly pithy finish. There is a sense of completeness to this Champs Canet that is endearing. Recommended. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. In Bond£1,000.00 -

Pale colour, less reductive than Champ Canet, fuller and fleshier in the nose, all in orchard fruit. Very attractive, with a generosity across the palate that has a perfect sense of balance. A fine, complete Perrières, with just the right touch of mineral behind. Drink from 2027-2035. Tasted Oct 2024.In Bond£1,000.00 -

A light green streak in the pale colour. The refinement and the precision set this apart from 2023. The fruit remains discreet, with some fresh apple on the palate, certainly more backward, yet promising for the future thanks to the persistence. Drink from 2027-2032. (50% of the vines in this .35 ha parcel were planted in 1980 and 1988, with the remainder planted in the ‘50s; the vines run from top to bottom and are planted in both terres rouges and terres blanches with a relative proportion of about 1/3 of the former and 2/3 of the latter). An airy, fresh and ripe nose combines notes of plum liqueur with a lovely plethora of floral and discreet spice elements. The super-sleek and beautifully delineated flavors are not particularly concentrated but they display a taut muscularity on the superbly long and impeccably well-balanced finale that is firm enough to repay extended keeping. A Bonnes Mares of relative refinement and one of the better vintages for this wine in recent memory. In Bond£1,000.00 -

(from a .53 ha holding of old vines of an indeterminate age). An exuberantly floral-suffused nose is perfumed, airy and wonderfully spicy. The lacy, pure and focused middle weight flavors display an almost aggressive minerality on the youthfully austere and equally long finale that is shaped by notably fine-grained tannins. This beauty of an Amoureuses is already stunningly good with the development potential to match. Pure class. In Bond£1,000.00 -

(from two different parcels of vines, one .56 ha parcel located in the premier cru Les Plantes, which was planted in 1968 and the second from a .77 ha holding in the villages-level portion of La Combe d’Orveau, 60% of which is young vines, and the remainder is 40+ year old vines; the split is about 55% La Combe d’Orveau and 45% Les Plantes). A ripe, fresh and elegant array is comprised by notes of red and dark currant, spice and a violet top note plus an interesting hint of orange peel. The beautifully textured and solidly concentrated medium weight flavors possess a lovely innate tension that carries over to the youthfully austere, balanced, minerally and impressively long finale. This is an excellent Chambolle villages. In Bond£1,700.00 -
