Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." The 2022 Montrachet Grand Cru is another wine from Jean-Chartron that embarrasses me by completely surpassing all expectations from barrel. It was the standout of four Montrachets poured blind. It has a well-defined bouquet, a mixture of white and yellow fruit, egg whites, white flowers and sea cave. The palate is beautifully poised with a perfectly tuned thread of acidity. It builds gracefully in the mouth, gaining precision all the time towards a magnificent, thrilling mineral-driven finish with incredible tension and vitality. The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes mainly from Hameau de Blagny. This is well-defined and focused on the nose: orchard fruit, grass clippings, and glimpses of exotic scents such as guava and passion fruit. Very pure in style. The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Pucelle 1er Cru has a delectable, beautifully defined bouquet with lemon verbena, orange pith and light limestone scents. The palate is well balanced and, for the vintage, quite thick in terms of texture, with real grip and concentration evident. Hints of stem ginger, rhubarb and dried honey are discreet on the prolonged finish. This can be approached now but there is long-term potential. Bottled under Diam 10. The 2022 Santenay Les Pierres Sèches comprises five barrels this year (one new). Orchard fruit mixed with light honeyed scents on the nose, perhaps requiring just a little more delineation. The palate is well-balanced with commendable purity, slightly waxy in texture, with a dab of stem ginger enlivening the finish. Firm reduction masks the fruit though there is again a beguiling sense of underlying tension suffusing the detailed and stony medium-bodied flavors that flash good power on the moderately austere and lingering if mildly warm finish that is supported by relatively fine-grained tannins. In contrast to the Damodes that could reasonably be enjoyed young, this compact effort is clearly in need of at least moderate to longer-term cellaring.In Bond£367.00
