Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Wine Advocate (92+)The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane exhibits aromas of pear, white flowers, freshly baked bread and stuck match, followed by a medium to full-bodied, ample and racy palate that's pure and precise, concluding with a chalky finish. As readers may remember, this parcel, formerly planted to red, abuts Pierre Morey's Meursault Perrières, and the soils are very stony. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (97)The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru has a very classy nose: superb delineation, crushed stone and apple blossom, strict and linear, yet intense. Vinous - Neal Martin (95)The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru lags behind the other three from this climat, reserved and surprisingly austere in the context of the growing season. Perhaps it is in an awkward phase? Returning after 10 minutes, scents of sea cave and sea spray emerge. The palate does not seem to possess the same degree of concentration, balanced with a tang of marmalade and ginger, yet without the precision that a Les Pucelles can deliver. Has it got something up its sleeve? Probably, so tuck this away for three or four years. Bottled under Diam. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Burghound (90-92)Outstanding. A markedly more floral-suffused nose features notes of cool Granny Smith apple, citrus and a touch of mineral reduction. The caressing, delicious and plump but agreeably energetic medium-bodied flavors possess solid depth and persistence on the balanced, firm and highly refreshing finale. This is also excellent for its level and a wine that should drink well after only 3 to 4 years of keeping but age gracefully for a decade. Recommended. |
