Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne
After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.
Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.
"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Burghound (92)(Sweet Spot Outstanding) An equally ripe yet slightly fresher nose blends notes of spice, pepper and earth with those of red currant, plum and a very subtle suggestion of wood. There is even better verve to the seductively textured, if not especially dense, medium-bodied flavors that possess evident minerality, all wrapped in sappy, lingering, dusty and youthfully austere finish that is the most structured in the range. Excellent with fine development potential. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)One barrel which is by measure – 280 litres, made with new dowels but one year old ends. A fuller yellow, with massive energy, multiple fruits through the yellow and white spectra, yet also rich summer flowers. Impressive density as one would hope, then firm acidity behind, still such a baby, and then suddenly the wine kicks on to another dimension at the finish, with a reprise of all the fruits and a greater sense of harmony. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: October 2023. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Mid lemon. The bouquet indicates a surprising breadth of flavour, as if this were a riper spot, and the attack continues in the same fashion, before the wine tightens up at the back in a crystalline fashion, as the stones take over. Very much a food wine, and one which will reward ageing. Drink from 2026-2032. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93)The 2022 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru has a tight nose that demands aeration, and there is an oatmeal element that just impedes across the fruit profile. The palate is rounded on the entry, slightly honeyed, and it makes me wonder if there was any botrytised fruit in the mix? Attractive…and it manifests more precision and sapidity in the glass. Bottled under Diam 30. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)Three plots which come from maternal grandmother Lucie. Mid lemon yellow, with a very pretty bouquet that gives an immediate desire to drink it. A salivating stony finish, beautifully done. Almost tannic says Damien, and even a little saline. Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted: October 2023. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (95+)The 2022 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a lovely nose, very precise and nuanced with white fruit, crushed stone, sea spray and apple blossom that gently unfold in the glass. Wonderful delineation and grace. The palate is very well balanced with a slightly honeyed opening (perhaps later picked?), but this delivers impressive precision and power, quite spicy in the mouth with stem ginger and white pepper lending another dimension on the finish. Long-term. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru is habitually one of the Domaine's strongest cards, though this year, it is challenged by the brilliant Caillerets. Still, you cannot deny the nose has excellent mineralité and complexity, with touches of chai and chamomile complementing the yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced, with great power and precision. Wonderful acidity is interwoven into this Chassagne with great precision and persistence on the finish: elegance and class. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Chenevottes 1er Cru, which was more or less ready to be bottled, has an attractive bouquet with lemon curd, crushed stone and light praline scents rendering very seductive aromatics. The 30% new oak is very well integrated. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight and tension. Quite edgy, veins of ginger come through on the finish, and there is a conspicuously persistent aftertaste. Very classy. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Vergers 1er Cru was reductive on the nose when I tasted the barrel sample, but that will be addressed by bottling time. There appears to be very good intensity here, and with time, there is an unexpected touch of Shiso leaf. The palate is well-balanced and poised, gently building towards an intense finish, more so than the Chenevottes, with a lingering spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb. |

Vinous - Neal Martin (90-92)The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 1er Cru has quite a strict nose that feels a little overshadowed by the Domaine's outstanding Chassagne at the moment. The palate is well-balanced with an edgy opening, slightly chalky in texture, with light red apple and stem ginger notes appearing towards the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle. |
