Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

The 2022 Bourgogne Chardonnay is a blend of parcels, 70% in Meursault and 30% in Puligny, with a majority purchased grapes and juice. It has a fresh, vibrant bouquet with citrus fruit and crushed stone - very well-defined. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly creamy texture thanks to the 20% new oak (a little higher than usual), offering touches of chamomile on the finish. Fine. NB This cuvée is bottled under Diam.

The 2022 Meursault Les Charmes 1er Cru has some reduction on the nose, though it is well defined and quite minerally, becoming smokier as it opens in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a tangy entry, lightly spiced and very harmonious, with a tensile and very long peacock's tail on the finish. What a wonderful Charmes! Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2022 Meursault Les Genevrières 1er Cru has a gorgeous nose, so nuanced with hints of pressed white flower and wet limestone filtering through the citrus fruit. Wonderful minéralité, though it is never a "showy" Genevrières. The palate is well balanced with a touch of wild honey on the entry, subtle notes of clementine and tinned peach lead to a very nuanced, very tender and persistent finish. Superb. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2022 Meursault Village has a lovely, harmonious, quite complex bouquet with mineral-infused pithy white fruit, the oak neatly integrated. The palate is well balanced with a tropical-tinged entry: passion fruit, pineapple and a touch of mango, though the acidic thread maintains tension and it segues into a judiciously spiced finish. More-ish. Bottled under Diam 10. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-96)

The Bâtard is still in barrel, without any sulphur adjustment, so in fact needs refreshing which will happen, especially when it goes into tank. Primrose colour, ripe pears with some passion fruit. A significant wealth of fruit but the final wine is not easy to be sure of at this stage. Clean pure fruit returns, not so obvious acidity. This wine is likely to develop better than it is currently showing. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.
