Vinous (90-92)

The 2022 Beaune Tuvilains 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with brambly black fruit, loamy and light iris flower scents. Cohesive and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh, marine-tinged black fruit and a sorbet-fresh finish. Very fine.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (87-89)

Racked recently. Very pretty mid purple, lots of energy, this is more concentrated than most. Fairly punchy, minor reduction, plenty of stuffing, good dark fruit. Ticks the boxes very nicely. Drink from 2025-2028.

A little darker purple. More plums in the bouquet along with dark raspberry. This is a fully satisfying wine with a deep rich fruit and just the right structure to finish. There is still a lot more to come - another wine which needs more elevage. Drink from 2032-2040.

Still in barrel like the rest below. Concentrated purple. Succulent yet with perfume. There is a fine tension to the dark fruit which cannot help offering its juicy dark raspberry aspect. Excellent weight on the palate, fine long aftertaste. Drink from 2028-2034.

There are quite a few berries in the bowl. Some fresh red fruit then much darer notes, I turn lightened up by the peppery notes to finish. This really kicks on magically behind! 75-80 whole bunch vinification. Drink from 2035.

(from a .27 ha parcel). An attractively fresh mix of red and dark currant is laced with ample floral and soft spice nuances. The supple and more refined middle weight flavors possess a bit more energy that carries over to the relatively powerful and lingering, and decidedly firm, finish where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. Like the Bussières, this is the best vintage for the Combottes that I’ve seen in sometime. I would add that Combottes is normally a relatively forward Chambolle 1er but that’s not the case in 2022.

Here too the ultra-fresh and beautifully perfumed nose offers up pure liqueur-like aromas of essence of red cherry that are cut with a plenitude of floral, especially rose petal and lavender, spice and exotic tea nuances that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The mouthfeel of the medium weight and overtly mineral-driven flavors is strikingly refined while delivering equally superb length on the almost painfully intense and beautifully delineated and youthfully austere finish. Sheer class and textbook Amoureuses.

This is outstanding though a wine that will need at least some patience.

(contains some premier cru juice from Fuées; from 8 different lieux-dits that include Les Athets, Les Barottes, Clos de l’Orme, Les Cras, Creux Baissants, Echézeaux, Les Mombies and Pas de Chat). A super-fresh and equally bright nose combines perfumed notes of plum, black cherry and subtle spice wisps. The rich, concentrated and seductive medium weight flavors exhibit unusually good power on the lingering, balanced and complex finale that is shaped by fine-grained tannins. This is an excellent Chambolle villages and worth your interest. Moreover, it’s sufficiently supple that it could be enjoyed young.
