Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Decanter (95)

The delicious Corton Bressandes has long been a favourite in this cellar. It is produced from a large (0.80 hectare) parcel that Pacalet rents, planted with 80-year-old massale selection vines at very high density. The vines give a small yield but very concentrated fruit that Pacalet ferments gently as whole clusters to deliver this intense, powerful wine that retains surprising elegance and finesse for such a substantial wine. The ripe mulberry and plum fruit aromas are hedged with earth and savoury game notes; the texture is tannic and compact. This Bressandes should open in five to seven years and drink well for decades.

Philippe Pacalet Echezeaux Grand Cru 2022 is a red Burgundy from France, sourced from the Echezeaux sub-region. Philippe Pacalet is widely recognised for an uncompromising, low-intervention approach in Burgundy: grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with no fining or filtration, allowing the cru’s detail to speak with minimal artifice. Elevage is conducted in oak to frame, rather than mask, Pinot Noir’s perfume and texture, with a strong emphasis on purity of fruit and transparency to site.

In the glass, expect an incisive, Grand Cru expression that prizes aromatic nuance over overt weight: dark cherry and wild berry notes, lifted florals, and a savoury, mineral edge, underpinned by finely grained tannins and a long, poised finish. Built for connoisseurs seeking precision, silence and depth over spectacle.
