Burgundy 2022 En Primeur: Blue Skies Over Beaune, Verdant Vines In Vosne

After the unusually cold and small-yielding 2021, the 2022 vintage swung back to what we might consider the “new norm”. With an overall abundance of warmth and sunshine, timely rainfall in June and August helped to balance out any effects of the heat. Early impressions tell a story of wines in general produced with more richness and concentration than their predecessors, with the best of them retaining all important freshness and disarming equilibrium.

Jasper Morris is the first critic to release the 2022 vintage report. He praised the vintage as "bountiful and beautiful" and recommends collectors to consider cellaring the wines.

"Vintages that came to mind were 1985 for the health of the grapes, 1999 for the size of the crop and the relative consistency of quality though with a bias towards the Côte de Beaune, and 2002 – just short of top flight but a really lovely flavour profile of medium density and longevity." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

"All other things being equal, I would recommend going large in 2022, large in the sense of a broad range because there are so many really good wines at all levels." Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay 1er Cru Pitures 2022 is a finely wrought red from France’s Burgundy, in the Volnay sub-region, crafted by Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur, one of the commune’s quietly exacting, family-run addresses. Drawn from the Premier Cru Pitures, it expresses Volnay’s hallmark poise through Pinot Noir: scented, detailed and built more on line than sheer weight. In the cellar, the domaine is known for traditional Burgundian élevage that privileges purity of fruit and transparent terroir articulation, using measured oak to frame rather than dominate. The 2022 vintage delivers a supple, polished texture with vivid red-berry perfume, savoury nuance and a long, mineral-inflected finish. Decant for aromatic lift in youth, or cellar to allow the tannins to knit and the bouquet to broaden into classic Volnay complexity.

Bitouzet Prieur Volnay 2022 is a refined red Burgundy from France, rooted in the silken, limestone-influenced slopes of Volnay. Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a long-established, family-run address, widely recognised by leading Burgundy commentators for its precise, terroir-faithful Pinot Noir and its measured use of oak. In 2022, the wine captures Volnay’s hallmark tension between perfume and structure: bright red-berry fruit, rose petal and subtle spice, framed by fine, powdery tannins and a cool, mineral line. The élevage is discreet, supporting detail rather than dominating it, with the focus kept firmly on clarity and balance. Already expressive, it has the depth and harmony to reward short cellaring, then unfold further complexity with time in bottle.

Burghound (93-96)

(Don't Miss!) Firm reduction pushes the fruit to the background though there is both superb intensity and power to the super-sleek larger-bodied flavors that are supported by dense but fine-grained tannins that shape the compact, youthfully austere and hugely long finale. This is exceptionally backward and like several of the wines in the range, a wine that's going to need extended keeping if you wish to see it at its peak. In a word, terrific.

The 2022 Bourgogne Rouge, which had been bottled in August, has a pretty bouquet with ripe red cherries and cranberry, quite pastille-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft entry. Balanced, though not a complex Bourgogne Rouge with a light landing on the finish. Drink over the next couple of years.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru shows some reduction on the nose, but there is more fruit intensity here compared to the Les Damodes, slightly darker and well-delineated. The palate is just beautiful: filigree tannins once again, fresh and vibrant, satin-like texture that belies the structure and grip. Superb sapidity here. It has a very sustained, peppery aftertaste. Outstanding.

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Damodes 1er Cru has a higher-toned bouquet than the Les Suchots, raspberry and tayberry, wilted rose petals and a touch of tangerine. Open and expressive, it gains intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent entry, silky smooth thanks to the filigree tannins. It gains weight and grip towards the finish with a touch of cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. Excellent.

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru, matured in 50% new oak, has another very pure bouquet that is slightly higher-toned than the Aux Jachées. There's just a touch of reduction on the day that I tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet fluid tannins that lend this Suchots a sense of rondeur. Well-judged acidity, quite caressing with a touch of piquancy on the finish, this is delightful, less ravishing yet more stylish Les Suchots that will drink beautifully over the next two decades.

Silky textured towards the finish, this is a wonderful Aux Jachées that will be difficult to resist in its youth.
