The finest Côte-Rôtie Chapoutier has produced since 1991, the dense purple-hued 2003 Côte-Rôtie La Mordoree reveals a sumptuous perfume of new saddle leather, barbecued meats, herbs, black raspberries, and creme de cassis. Bass notes of roasted mesquite and ganache support the fig and currant core, with lots of singed bay leaf, charcoal and espresso to fill in on the finish, where a black tea note echoes in the background. A blend of old vines in the lieux-dits of Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, the 2016 Cote Rotie la Mordorée shows a bit of cedary oak up front (it spent 18 months in 30% new barriques). It's full-bodied and ripe on the palate, with herb-tinged red fruit notes that show mammoth complexity and a fine, silky, long finish.

Chapoutier Cote-Rotie La Mordoree 2017 (1x150cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (98-100)

The flagship La Mordorée cuvée is always destemmed and vinified in concrete tanks before spending 18 months in 30% new French oak. Flamboyant, sexy, and pure, the 2017 Côte Rôtie La Mordorée knocks it out of the park with its crazy good bouquet of black raspberries, flowers, olives, bacon fat, and gamey, meaty nuances. Insanely complex, elegant and seamless, with a pure silk-like texture, this beauty has no hard edges, ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish. It has perfection written all over it and is quite possibly the wine of the vintage!

More tight and reserved than the open-knit Le Meal Blanc, the 2006 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree offers a heavenly bouquet of caramelized orchard fruits, celery seed, buttered hazelnuts, orange blossom and white flowers. Just crazy good on the palate, with full-bodied richness and a seamless, unctuous texture, it has incredible purity, precision and length, with this liquid rock-like minerality on the finish. Slightly better is the 600-case cuvee of 2008 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree. This brilliant white Hermitage from the top of the granite dome of this appellation offers notes of roasted hazelnuts, nectarine oil, citrus, quince and crushed rocks. Even better and always one of the top whites in any given vintage, the 2011 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree (first produced in 1991) comes from 80+-year-old Marsanne vines planted in the Les Murets lieu-dit. Gorgeously full-bodied and impeccably put together on the palate, with awesome texture and richness that’s framed by vibrant acidity, it boasts off the hook aromas and flavors of flower oil, buttered citrus, dried pineapple and powdered rock. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon 1994 (1x150cl)

Wine Advocate (96)

The 1994 Ermitage Le Pavillon (Chapoutier drops the H out of respect for the ancient spelling of Hermitage) is another blockbuster, phenomenally concentrated wine. Le Pavillon is generally among the top three or four wines of France in every vintage! The 1994's opaque purple color, and wonderfully sweet, pure nose of cassis and other black fruits intertwined with minerals, are followed by a wine of profound richness, great complexity, and full body. It is almost the essence of blackberries and cassis. There is huge tannin in this monster Ermitage, that somehow manages to keep its balance and elegance. Made from a parcel of vines (which I have walked through), some of which pre-date the phylloxera epidemic, the 1994 Ermitage Le Pavillon should be purchased only by those who are willing to invest 10-12 years of cellaring. It will not reach full maturity before the end of the first decade of the next century, after which it will last for 30+ years.

The most concentrated 2008 Ermitage is Le Pavillon (915 cases). Backward as well as elegant, it offers up scents of blueberries, blackberries, camphor, black truffles and earth. The wine is medium to full-bodied, moderately tannic and, atypically, capable of lasting 20-25+ years.

Wine Advocate (100)

Tasting like the concentrated blood from an aged and grilled strip steak, the 2010 Ermitage Le Pavillon boasts a black/purple color along with creme de cassis, camphor, pen ink, white flower and lead pencil shaving characteristics in its massive, full-bodied personality. It almost defies description because of its ethereal concentration and off-the-charts extract levels. This is not for the faint of heart, or those who lack patience, as it will require 10-15 years of bottle age, and, as previously stated, will keep for 50 or more. There are just over 1,000 cases of the 2010 Le Pavillon, another perfect wine in the constellation of profound wines produced by Michel Chapoutier.

Chiara Condello Le Lucciole Riserva 2016 (6x75cl)

Vinous (94)

Sourced from a small parcel within Chiara Condello's vineyard, which is unique for its east-facing exposition and poor soils, the incredibly elegant and refined 2016 Le Lucciole Riserva really leaves an impression. Here I'm finding a remarkably fresh and cool-toned expression, displaying dusty ripe cherry, smoke and sweet red florals, grounded by a hint of animal muskiness. On the palate, textures of pure silk release tart cherries brought to life by vibrant acids, as saline-minerals saturate the senses and hints of fine tannin add balance. The finish is long, displaying mineral-laden bright red fruits, kept in motion by lingering acids, while hints of fine tannin persist in this classically structured Sangiovese. Elegance personified.

Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2018 (6x75cl)

James Suckling (99)

This is a superb edition of this revered, cabernet-based blend with such complete, seamless and elegant feel, yet there’s such depth of flavor, too. Aromas of fresh redcurrants, red and violet flowers, subtle spice, fresh earth, paper bark, fresh-picked thyme and sage, red berries and some cedary notes. The palate is stunning and has a brand of elegance with power that is found in only the greatest wines. Pristine mulberries, red plums, blueberries and red cherries sail through layers of fine tannin, into an unwaveringly long and vibrant finish. An exceptionally concentrated and convincing Diana Madeline release, this is one of their finest. A blend of 79% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 5% malbec. Delicious now, but his will bloom from 2028. Screw cap.

Wine Advocate (99)

Deep, rich and full-throttle, yet still elegant and focused, the 2005 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree is 100% Marsanne from the Les Murets lieu-dit and was brought up all in demi-muids. Offering off the hook notes of quince, honeysuckle, liquid rock, orange blossom and sautéed peach, this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, notable freshness and purity, and a crazy long finish. White wine doesn’t get much better, and this beauty will have another two to three decades of longevity.

It's just about as good as it gets, and while it's drinking great today, it should keep for 2-3 decades.

Slightly better is the 600-case cuvee of 2008 Ermitage Cuvee de l’Oree. This brilliant white Hermitage from the top of the granite dome of this appellation offers notes of roasted hazelnuts, nectarine oil, citrus, quince and crushed rocks. Astonishingly full-bodied and rich, particularly in view of the vintage conditions, it is exceeded in quality ever so slightly by the two white Hermitages that follow.

It will be even better in another year, and age pretty much forever. As I’ve said before though, there is no harm in drinking these beauties in their youth.

Shows the zesty loganberry, raspberry and boysenberry fruit of the vintage with added depth and flesh, while black tea, pastis and briar notes fill in on the nicely grippy finish. There's impressive depth all the way through. Drink now through 2016. 907 cases made. -JM

A perfect wine, the 2009 Ermitage Le Pavillon (1,093 cases) boasts a black/purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of acacia flowers, blackberries, blueberries, roasted meats, creme de cassis, truffles, graphite, powdered rock and new saddle leather.

Screw cap.
