Piedmont
Piedmont, located in northwest Italy, is renowned for producing some of the world's most exquisite fine wines. With its breath-taking landscapes, diverse terroir, and a rich winemaking heritage, Piedmont offers a captivating range of wines that captivate the senses. The region is home to legendary vineyards and wineries that have gained global recognition for their exceptional quality.
One of the most famous vineyards in Piedmont is Gaja, a family-owned winery that has played a pivotal role in elevating the region's wines to international acclaim. Their wines, such as Barbaresco and Barolo, are synonymous with excellence and showcase the complexity and elegance of Piedmontese wines. Another esteemed vineyard is Vietti, known for its iconic Barolo wines that beautifully reflect the region's terroir and winemaking traditions.
Piedmont is renowned for its red wines, particularly Barolo and Barbaresco, both made from the Nebbiolo grape. Barolo is often referred to as the "King of Wines" due to its full-bodied structure, intense aromatics, and potential for aging. Notable vineyards like Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, and Paolo Scavino craft outstanding Barolo wines that capture the essence of the region. Barbaresco, a neighboring appellation, offers equally exceptional wines with a slightly softer and more approachable character. Renowned vineyards such as Produttori del Barbaresco and Gaja produce remarkable Barbaresco wines that exemplify the region's winemaking prowess.
Piedmont is also famous for its white wine, Moscato d'Asti, a sweet and aromatic wine made from the Moscato grape. Producers such as Michele Chiarlo and Saracco offer delightful Moscato d'Asti wines that are loved for their fragrant bouquet and refreshing sweetness.
Additionally, the region produces other notable wines, including Barbera d'Alba, Dolcetto d'Alba, and Gavi. These wines exhibit unique characteristics that reflect the local terroir and grape varieties.
Piedmont's fine wines are a true expression of artistry and tradition, showcasing the region's commitment to excellence. Whether you're savoring a prestigious Barolo, an elegant Barbaresco, or a delightful Moscato d'Asti, Piedmont's wines offer a remarkable journey of flavors and a glimpse into the rich winemaking heritage of this captivating region.

Aside from the Barbaresco Crichet, the 2018 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is my favorite of these 2018s from Roagna. It displays the elements of the wines from younger vines and intensifies them, with notes of preserved strawberries and raspberries, dewy earth, fresh herbs, sweet flowers, and wet stones. It’s powerful on the palate without weight, offering ripe fruit, savory mineral and salty earth notes, and terrific, ripe structure. It’s long on the palate, revealing notes of dried apricot and spice. Drink 2026-2050.Inc. VAT£1,309.72 -

The Roagna 2019 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione comes from a 0.49-hectare parcel that was purchased in 2016. The vineyards lay adjacent to Pira, thus opening the possibility for the Roagna family to buy this land. The vines average 50 years old, and the plan is to eventually have this wine join the Vecchie Viti series. Because this is only the fourth year of production, that remains a goal for the future. This distinctive site, one of my personal favorites in the Barolo appellation, always delivers special sharpness and linear focus. You get that here along with a very long finish. The wine has muscle, but it also shows supple roundness and ample fruit weight. This is a wine to watch.Inc. VAT£936.35 -

A blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo, the 2021 Langhe Bianco Solea offers a good deal intensity on the nose, with a light resinous feel and possibly a light oak influence in its notes of ripe pear, fresh peach, orange citrus, and resin. Salty and intense on the palate, it has a supple texture, but retains lovely focus and tension while having a good bit of depth. Drink 2024-2032.Inc. VAT£739.86 -

A plummy wine, with hints of cedar. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a pretty plum and mineral aftertaste. Long and silky. Very fine, yet compacted and powerful. Solid as a rock. Brunate is always great in top years. Best after 2008. 350 cases made. -JSInc. VAT£2,354.81 -

The 2008 Barolo Brunate is beautifully balanced from start to finish. Freshly cut flowers, mint, licorice, hard candy and dark red fruit are layered in this utterly impeccable Barolo. Waves of fruit build toward a huge, dramatic finish supported by serious tannins, yet the Brunate remains one of the more understated wines here. The Brunate is all about length, weightless elegance and an elusiveness that is only matched by the greatest Burgundies. This is a dazzling effort. Readers should expect the Brunate to take the better part of a decade to become expressive. Following the Brunate over the course of several days was immensely rewarding. A rich, explosive wine, the 2009 Barolo Brunate hits the palate with masses of dark fruit, pine, menthol, wild herbs, cloves and new leather. Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backdrop for this stunning, structured Barolo. The 2009 Brunate has class and pure pedigree to burn. When I was younger, I didn't really get the Brunate, but as I have gotten older my appreciation for this wine has grown. This is one sexy Barolo from Roberto and Davide Voerzio.Inc. VAT£2,476.01 -

The 2010 Barolo Brunate is incredibly silky and polished in this vintage. Pine, menthol, licorice, black cherries and plums flesh out in a dark, gorgeous Barolo loaded with class and elegance. A super-classic Roberto Voerzio wine, the 2013 Barolo Brunate is powerful yet translucent, with exceptional balance and tons of class. Dark red cherry, plum, spice, menthol and a host of balsamic-inflected overtones develop nicely in the glass.
