The Wine Independent (98)The 2017 Marchesi Antinori Solaia has an inky black core with a young-looking, vivid purple rim. Wow! The nose is bright, pure, exuberant, and joyful with precise blackberry and blackcurrant aromas. This is such an appealing wine, focused on ripe expressive fruit, unhampered by too much oak. I adore its open, cheerful, accessible style. There is of course lots of cream, vanilla, and sweet spice notes but they are integrated beautifully into the rest of the wine. Silky and beautifully perfumed in the glass, the 2013 is gracious, airy and wonderfully refined. Bright red cherry fruit, chalk, mint and wild roses soar out of the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2013 goes in time. Over the years, I have learned that these wines have a way of transforming in bottle that is hard to predict. More than anything else, the 2021 is a fine example of the style Antinori favors these days, an approach that favors finesse more than opulence. Dark plum, mocha, licorice, chocolate, spice, lavender and menthol build effortlessly in the glass. Oak and tannin are impeccably balanced. The 2021 spent 18 months in wood, three months in once-used barrels during the malolactic fermentation and then 15 months in 100% new barrels for the rest of its aging. |

Vinous (94)The 2013 Sangiovese is the first wine at Soldera in which production bounces back to normal. Silky and beautifully perfumed in the glass, the 2013 is gracious, airy and wonderfully refined. Bright red cherry fruit, chalk, mint and wild roses soar out of the glass. It will be interesting to see where the 2013 goes in time. Over the years, I have learned that these wines have a way of transforming in bottle that is hard to predict. Today, the 2013 comes across as on the lighter side, although I have tasted some bottles that show more depth. |

I would be in no rush to open the 2014 today, as it is still very young. Soldera has historically done quite well in difficult years. I won’t be at all surprised if the 2014 turns out even better than this note suggests. |
