Barbaresco
Barbaresco, seen as the more elegant counterpart of Barolo, spreads over 763 ha under vines (a third of Barolo’s ha), and is divided into four communes.
The Nebbiolo grape is said to ripen earlier here because of the gentler altitude – up to 450 metres – and the proximity to the Tanaro river. The legal guidelines for ageing reflect this, requiring only 26 months minimum of ageing for Barbaresco compared to 38 months for Barolo. Along with altitude, soil variations are another reason for their flavour differences: Barolo and Barbaresco are both limestone-based soils, but Barbaresco's soil is comparatively younger. Stylistically, Barbaresco is often described as a more elegant version of Barolo but, like its neighbour, its wines can come in a diverse spectrum of styles and are never without energy and power.

Vinous (93)The 2018 Barbaresco Gaiun Martinenga is a beautiful wine that shows the style of both the vintage and cru perched just above Asili. Dark cherry/plum, spice, menthol, licorice and a touch of nicely judged oak fill out the layers. In 2018 Gaiun is a bit light, as most wines are, and yet its balance is absolutely impeccable. Terrific. |

Vinous (92)The 2008 Barbaresco Martinenga fleshes out nicely with time in the glass. Sweet dark cherries, licorice, spices and leather are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. I very much like the way the 2008 has developed over the last year. I will not at all be surprised if it continues to improve in bottle as it is fresher and more vibrant than the 2009. The 2008 is a gorgeous wine that captures the very best of the house style. |

Vinous (93)The 2016 Barbaresco Martinenga is absolutely gorgeous. Pliant and deep, with terrific energy driving the flavors, the Martinenga really shows how compelling the vintage is. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, mint and chalk all lift out of the glass effortlessly. The 2016 is gracious and light on its feet, as all these wines are, yet it has an extra level of dimension that is one of the signatures of the year. The Barbaresco Martinenga is a real overachiever, and in that sense, the wine in this range reader should not miss. |

Vinous (91)The 2018 Barbaresco Martinenga is already quite expressive, its very recent bottling notwithstanding. Crushed flowers, mint, star anise, orange peel and spice are all laced together in a Barbaresco that is all about transparency and nuance. The light to medium-bodied style is classic 2018 and classic Martinenga. |

Vinous (90+)The 2019 Barbaresco Martinenga is bright and punchy. Sweet cherry, dried flowers, orange peel, mint and cinnamon are nicely lifted throughout. There's terrific purity to the red-toned Nebbiolo fruit. Give this mid-weight Barbaresco a few years to soften the somewhat nervy angular contours that are present today. |

Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (97)This is savoury, dry in the best possible way, with a ton of red fruits, dried roses and herbs, and waves of fragrance. It’s a successful blend where the Sangiovese is dominant, conferring the wine with its warm personality but the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a touch of austerity to the tannins and a sense of quiet confidence. Turmeric and olive tapenade as it opens, alongside raspberry, red cherry and smoky oak, the whole thing both extremely delicate and intensely fragrant. Can drink now with a short carafe - there are tannins here but they are well defined and finely layered - but it will also age. Small amounts of the 2018 were released last winter, but this September sees the first proper release through the Place de Bordeaux. Ageing 18 months in small French oak barrels, 70% new, plus four months in concrete tanks afterwards. One to look out for - great stuff from the Mazzei family, that has been making wine in Tuscany since the 15th century. |
