Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

The 2017 Barolo Arborina is a big, dramatic wine. Super-ripe red fruit, mint, white pepper and spice are all amplified in a Barolo that takes all the signatures of this well-known La Morra cru and turns up the dial. As always, the Arborina has some nervousness in the tannin, but historically that is one of the things that has helped this wine age well. There is certainly no shortage of character here.In Bond£462.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is such a pleasure to taste. I feel like I am in La Morra, in Rocche dell'Annunziata, looking down the patchwork of parcels on this steep hillside. Freshly cut flowers, mint, spice and sweet red/purplish berry fruit notes abound. More than anything though, the 2017 is distinguished by its silky tannins and exceptional balance. In a word: sublime. In Bond£470.00 -

This is so perfumed and beautiful with cherries, strawberries and dried flowers that follow through to a medium to full body with firm, fine tannins and a long, energetic finish. All about length and finesse. Drink in 2024.In Bond£200.00 -

The 2017 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is a bit closed today, but it offers lovely persistence in a mid-weight, classically austere style that is quite appealing. Sweet dried cherry, mint, cedar, tobacco, dried cherry and dried flowers are all finely knit. The 2017 feels candied in its fruit profile, compact and also showing early signs of oxidation, all which suggest it may not be long-lived. Tasted twice with similar results. In Bond£425.00 -

Dense and muscular, with cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and eucalyptus flavors in the grip of assertive tannins. Despite being lithe and light-bodied, this red finds equilibrium in the end, with the red fruit lingering on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2045. 1,009 cases made.In Bond£1,000.00 -

This is a small production of just 986 bottles that Luca Roagna sources from a tiny parcel that he once described to me as a "house garden" more than a vineyard. The 2017 Barolo del Comune di Barolo is made with fruit from Terlo, and the vines are more than 50 years old. There is a hint of ripeness from the hot vintage with baked plum and blackcurrant. But the wine shows a nuanced and complex side with layers of grilled herb and crushed flowers. In Bond£705.00 -
