Barolo 2017
Barolo 2017s - First Impression by Walter Speller at JancisRobinson.com
Vintage 2017 was the hottest and driest vintage on record in Italy. It was undoubtedly a year that required agile vineyard management and an expert understanding of the terroir. Those wine-makers who were able to successfully mitigate the effect of heat, slow down ripening and pull forward harvest dates were the ones who triumphed in 2017.
Walter Speller at jancisrobinson.com released his first impressions on Barolo 2017 last month. Calling it a “surprising vintage”, he says most of the Barolo 2017s he tasted did indeed display “freshness and elegance” despite the heatwave conditions, a testament to how modern wine-makers are rising to the challenge of a warming world!

Vinous (91)The 2017 Barolo is a very pretty, elegant wine and one of the few straight Barolos in this vintage that is truly finessed. Translucent and so expressive, the Oddero Barolo is wonderfully expressive right out of the gate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry, mint and cinnamon all grace this super-expressive Barolo. |

Vinous (94)The 2017 Barolo Brunate is an utterly beguiling wine and one of the highlights of the vintage. Rose petal, cinnamon, blood orange, spice and star anise give the Brunate striking aromatic nuance and a real feeling of exoticism that is so alluring. In 2017, the Brunate is translucent and simply haunting in its beauty. I loved it. The Brunate is the smallest bottling of the Oddero crus. It is well worth the effort of seeking out. |

Vinous (96)The 2017 Barolo Riserva Bussia Vigna Mondoca is a gorgeous, sensual wine. The bouquet alone is captivating. Dried rose petal, spice, menthol, leather, lavender and dried herb notes soar out of the glass. The raciness of this warm, dry vintage comes through in the wine's inner sweetness, but there is terrific freshness and plenty of site character as well. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a Barolo. |

Vinous (95.5)The 2017 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is lovely, understated and very pretty. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint and orang peel emerge, but only with great reluctance. That's probably a good thing for its long-term aging prospects. Readers should not expect an easygoing Barolo by any means. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2017 Barolo Ginestra shows a fine and delicate bouquet with aromas of wild rose and crushed flowers that are not common in this hot and dry vintage. The Ginestra vineyard in Monforte d'Alba maintains its character despite the unpredictable swings of this unruly growing season. The wine builds considerably more power in the palate, where it shows tight tannins and a 15% alcohol content. The bouquet shows balance, but this hearty vintage punches strongest in terms of mouthfeel. Some 16,000 bottles were made. |

Vinous (88)Scavino’s 2017 Barolo is gracious and perfumed. Medium in body and a touch fleeting, the 2017 looks to be a wine best suited for drinking now and over the next few years. The stresses of the growing season were most severe on less-important sites, so it makes sense that the straight Barolo is a touch light. Sweet red cherry, mint, dried flowers and spice linger. |
