Barolo

Known as the king of wines, it is potent, complex and long-lived wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. The appellation is spread over 2,134 ha in total and consists of several villages and communes. divided into a multitude of individual vineyard sites and crus similar to Burgundy, with many producers owning small plots of the individual crus.

The main winemaking approach is a long maceration of Nebbiolo grapes - between 30 to 60 days -followed by a long maturation period in large old casks for a minimum of 38 months. And many producers often choose to age their wines even longer than this because of the intense fruit and powerful tannins of their grapes.

The combination of microclimate, altitude, soil, exposition and each winemaker’s individual touch is what makes every Barolo different. And in the main communes such as Serralunga, Castiglione Falletto, and La Morra, their Barolos are renowned for certain characteristics unique to each of them, due to their differing soils and exposition.

  • Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca 2003 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

Giampaolo Pira's 2003 Barolo Marenca is gorgeous. Dark red cherries, plums, menthol, smoke and dried roses meld together effortlessly in the glass. The 2003 is remarkably young for its age, but there again, we are in Serralunga. If opened today the 2003 needs a lot of air to allow the searing tannins to soften. The 2003 is pretty much mature, but it has enough depth to drink well for another 5 maybe 10 years. This is a fabulous showing for the year.

    Vinous (93+)

The 2013 Barolo Marenca is dark, plush and inviting. As always, the Marenca is a Barolo of notable textural breadth and volume. Hints of mocha, leather, spice and grilled herbs add aromatic nuance to the dark-fleshed Nebbiolo fruit, but it is the wine's structure and overall depth that stand out most. Pira's Marenca has a way of developing beautifully in bottle and often surprises over time. I would cellar it for at least a few years.

  • Marcarini Barolo Brunate 1999 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 1999 Barolo Brunate remains one of the most backward, closed wines of the year. Still hiding behind a wall of impenetrable tannin, the 1999 will challenge readers to continue to be patient. Dark plums, black cherries, menthol, tar and licorice explode from the glass, but the 1999 still needs time, and likely lots of it. Nevertheless, the pure aristocratic beauty of this site comes through in spades.
  • Marcarini Barolo Brunate 2008 (1x75cl)

The 2008 Barolo Brunate is gorgeous. An open, beguiling bouquet redolent of Christmas cake, plums, menthol and licorice melds into an expressive core of dark fruit. The mystery and allure of Brunate is on full display. The 2008 was quite open just after bottling, but it has begun to shut down since then. Both times I have tasted it, the wine has been translucent, weightless and yet powerful at the same time. In other words, the embodiment of what makes Barolo one of the most fascinating and complex wines in the world. Simply put, this is textbook Barolo from La Morra's top vineyards. The 2008 Brunate is steeped in class, but readers will have to be patient.

  • Marcarini Barolo Brunate 2010 (1x300cl)

Bright, dark red. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of bitter cherry, blackberry, mint, blood orange and white peach. Then dense, sweet and pliant yet penetrating thanks to terrific vibrant acidity. For a medium-bodied wine, this communicates an impression of strong dry extract. The firm tannins arrive late, allowing the wine's finishing fruit to expand and stain the palate. Classic 2010 energy here.
  • Marcarini Barolo Brunate 2015 (6x75cl)

The 2015 Barolo Brunate is powerful, dense and tightly wound. That should not be much of an issue, as the 2015 will be released later than normal, a path Marcarini will take gradually over the next few years with the goal of releasing the wine two years later than they had previously. Dark and hulking in the glass, the 2015 is clearly not in the mood to show all of its cards today. Iron, smoke, menthol, game, dried rose petal and soil tones give the Brunate its brooding, inward personality.

  • Luigi Pira Barolo Marenca 2013 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

The 2013 Barolo Marenca is dark, plush and inviting. As always, the Marenca is a Barolo of notable textural breadth and volume. Hints of mocha, leather, spice and grilled herbs add aromatic nuance to the dark-fleshed Nebbiolo fruit, but it is the wine's structure and overall depth that stand out most. Pira's Marenca has a way of developing beautifully in bottle and often surprises over time. I would cellar it for at least a few years.

There is plenty of richness and intensity, but thankfully the bruising tannins of the past appear to have been tamed. There is a lot of wine here. This is a fine, fine showing.

    Vinous (95)

    Vinous (93+)

Bright, dark red. Pungent, high-pitched aromas of bitter cherry, blackberry, mint, blood orange and white peach. Then dense, sweet and pliant yet penetrating thanks to terrific vibrant acidity. For a medium-bodied wine, this communicates an impression of strong dry extract. The firm tannins arrive late, allowing the wine's finishing fruit to expand and stain the palate. Classic 2010 energy here.
  • Marcarini Barolo Brunate 2015 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2015 Barolo Brunate is powerful, dense and tightly wound. That should not be much of an issue, as the 2015 will be released later than normal, a path Marcarini will take gradually over the next few years with the goal of releasing the wine two years later than they had previously. Dark and hulking in the glass, the 2015 is clearly not in the mood to show all of its cards today. Iron, smoke, menthol, game, dried rose petal and soil tones give the Brunate its brooding, inward personality.

Marcarini's 2016 Barolo Brunate captures much of the mystique of this La Morra site in its beguiling aromatics. Deep, layered and so expressive, the 2016 has a lot to offer. Time in the glass brings out an exotic quality to the red toned fruit, with spice, menthol and floral overtones that linger. I would not be in a rush to open bottles.
