The 2019 Barolo Parussi is Massolino's sole Barolo from Castiglione Falletto. A wine of total grace and refinement, the 2019 is pure seduction. Freshly cut flowers, mint, sweet red berry fruit, orange peel and rose petal soar out of the glass. Readers will find an elegant, sublime Barolo that hits all the right notes. Don't miss it.

Massolino works mostly with Serralunga d'Alba fruit, but this is the one exception. From a vineyard site in Castiglione Falletto with sandy limestone soils, the 2020 Barolo Parussi is a stunner. The wine is radiant and bright with an especially direct and focused quality. I would describe it as razor-sharp. This adds to a general sense of fine polish and tightness. I can't get enough and I can't wait to see where it goes 10 or 20 years from now. Parussi is an 8,300-bottle release.

The very complete and immensely enjoyable 1998 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda presents a superbly elegant nose of violets, menthol, spices, licorice, smoke and underbrush. It comes across as soft yet persistent, and displays beautifully delineated flavors of rich dark fruit, with a balsamic note that develops in the glass, finishing with great length and overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.

The 2001 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda is in a great place now. It, too, has aged beautifully. Macerated cherry, spice, cedar and new leather soar over the palate. At nearly 25 years of age, the 2001 is still quite vibrant and fresh. I expected to see a bit more evolution, to be honest. This is a terrific showing.

Hailing from one of the most celebrated vineyards in the entire denomination, this focused beauty boasts layers of complexity and depth, starting with its classic Nebbiolo aromas of forest floor, new leather, violet and wild berry. Balanced and firmly structured, the palate shows tension, power and elegance, delivering succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, tobacco and licorice alongside firm, aristocratic tannins. It's still young but already beautifully balanced, with bright acidity.

Now, for the million dollar question. Is it better than the 2016? Right now, I give an edge to the 2017 for its greater finesse and total sense of exotic beauty. But time will be the judge. I do look forward to tasting the 2016 and 2017 side by side!

The 2008 Taurasi Radici Riserva Antonio is a one-off wine made only this vintage to celebrate the incredible life and influence of Antonio Mastroberardino who passed away in January 2014. The wine is made only with fruit from the Montemarano vineyard and it ages in wood for 30 months (40% sees botte grande and 60% goes into barrique). This is a beautifully polished and sophisticated wine with a deep, dark color and an impressively silky quality to the tannins. The bouquet shows ethereal tones of dried earth, rose petal, tar, resin and cola. The 2008 vintage was especially successful terms of phenolic ripeness for color intensity and aromas. I went back to the wine an hour after tasting it and was delighted to see that it continued to evolve and open. This is an elegant wine dedicated to one of the most passionate advocates of Campania wine.

Super-elegant but really tight aglianico here with lightly peppery black fruit, colored with inky and spicy notes. With aeration, you move into the herbal zone, with fresh bay-leaf, chai and light rosemary. The palate is medium-to full-bodied and you feel all the aromas pent-up, ready to burst out. The tension here is palpable and this will need several more years before the firm tannins soften, allowing the wine to open up and flood your palate. Still be patient. Try from 2024.

This is super silky and elegant aglianico with a deep and dense core of ripe red and black fruit. Full-bodied with beautifully embedded, fine-grained tannins and a long, controlled finish. Just a little pull on the mouth right at the end, so probably best to give it another year or two, if you can resist. Best from 2024.

Luminous red. Highly complex nose offers aromas of red cherry, raspberry, flint and violet, plus a touch of beef bouillon; this is a candidate for the most complex nose of the vintage. Then textbook Sangiovese flavors of flinty red cherries, licorice and minerals. Long and clean on the perfumed, highly mineral finish.
