Experience the elegance of Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva Coltassala 2016, a testament to the esteemed tradition of the Chianti Classico region. Crafted in the heart of Tuscany’s rolling hills, this Riserva is meticulously produced by the renowned Volpaia estate, a family-owned winery with medieval origins and a commitment to excellence. The 2016 vintage showcases a harmonious blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Canaiolo grapes, hand-harvested from selected vineyards. James Suckling (99)
This is a huge and impressive wine, but somehow graceful and subtle. It packs an eclectic array of brambleberry compote, violet essence, eucalyptus, oyster shell, pure iodine, vanilla, resin, tar, cassis, plum liqueur and hot stones. You can only stand back in awe as one shade of fruit appears after the next and a barrage of tannin coats your mouth. Yet, this is gentle, agile and flowing. Nevertheless, its main attraction remains its unashamed, monumental power and muscularity. A haunting wine that sends chills down your spine. An epoch-defining wine for Veneto that harks back to the legends of the ‘50s and ‘60s. Perhaps the best Amarone ever made. Impossible to resist now, but better in 2022.Inc. VAT£759.29 -
James Suckling (98)
An Amarone for the future with terrific richness and tannin power, offering dried fruit, figs, blackberries, bark, mushrooms and hints of wood. Full-bodied and very structured with a powerful finish. It needs a lot of time to come around. Try it after 2024.Inc. VAT£741.29 -
Decanter (97)
This remarkable Amarone won the very highest acclaim from its original judging panel and then sailed through every subsequent judging stage, to the extent that its appearance in our Best In Show collection was never seriously in doubt. It’s already over five years old, but is still very dark in the glass -- and it’s a wine of remarkable aromatic complexity, too. Amarone-lovers will know just how many allusions these wines are capable of evoking, and it’s not hard to make out mushrooms, forest underbrush, truffle, Havana leaf and even woodland violets as well as the more usual confit cherries and plums in this wine’s aromatic profile. In the mouth, the wine is remarkably concentrated yet elegant, carrying that bundle of allusions effortlessly and seamlessly through the palate. Fine-beaded tannins lend support, and the concentration of fruit is such that any overt acidity is almost an afterthought.Inc. VAT£670.49 -

This is one of those wines where your nose is in the glass for ages, enjoying the complex array of aromas that range from raspberries to dates, perfumed bark to polished wood, pressed flowers to fresh mushrooms. Full-bodied, dense and focused with fine, well-integrated tannins, plenty of fruit flavor and an endless finish. A joy to drink even now, but this will age gracefully for many a year.Inc. Dark red. The captivating, complex nose offers urgent aromas of red cherry, dried redcurrant, brown spices, roasted coffee, violet, botanical herbs and licorice. Sweet, ripe and velvety, with wonderful inner-mouth perfume to the flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes long and suave, but with a very firm spine. La Mattonara is a lieu-dit; this wine is made from a selection of grapes picked in Zymé’s oldest vineyards (up to 50 years old). Spends a long nine years in Slavonian oak barrels of different sizes (up to 20 hectoliters).Inc. VAT£2,154.30 -

For all of its intensity and depth, the 2009 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva La Mattonara is remarkably fresh. It mixes medicinal cherry and crushed blackberry with sweet balsam herbs and hints of cocoa. This is opulence personified, impossibly rich and velvety, mixing both savory and sweet while saturating the senses with wild berry preserves contrasted by sour citrus. A wall of tannin grips the palate through the finale; yet throughout, this remains fresh, leaving lavender and clove to linger. The 2009 is a caged beast, as well as a total beauty.Inc.
