In the world of fine wines, the Antoniotti Odilio Bramaterra 2015 stands distinguished for its distinct complexity and remarkable balance. Crafted meticulously by the Antoniotti family, renowned vintners since the 19th century, from the eclectic terroir of Northern Piedmont, Italy. A harmonious blend of Nebbiolo, Croatina, Vespolina and Uva Rara, it undertakes a two-week fermentation in stainless steel before maturing patiently for 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels.

On the palate, it unfolds a symphony of cherry and raspberry, counterbalanced by profound mineral notes and velvety tannin. Vibrant acidity and a long, lingering finish affirm its eminent stature, making it a cherished choice among connoisseurs. The Argentiera Bellamarsilia Morellino di Scansano 2018 is a quintessential representation of Italian winemaking excellence. Crafted by the esteemed Argentiera Winery in the Tuscany wine region, this exceptional red utilises predominantly Sangiovese grapes, blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The fermentation process takes place in lined concrete vats, allowing for softer, more refined tannins. Upon tasting, you'll find sensuous layers of red berry fruit, tobacco, and spice, underscored by a delicate, lingering acidity. Through careful maturation in new French oak barrels, the Argentiera Bellamarsilia Morellino di Scansano 2018 attains an unparalleled balance of fruit and wood. The Argentiera estate is notably the highest and closest to the sea in the Bolgheri amphitheatre, which bestows a remarkable salinity to the wine. This Morellino di Scansano is a true testament to Argentiera's commitment to producing wines of impeccable quality and character.

A bright red color, the 2022 Bellamarsilia is 100% Sangiovese raised in stainless steel. It’s fresh on the nose, with notes of bright red cherry, saline, fresh orange, and red flowers. On the palate, it’s refreshing and medium-bodied, with fine tannins, a clean feel, refreshing acidity, and a clean finish. A very charming wine from the only appellation of Sangiovese in Tuscany that touches the sea, it has a refreshing salty nature and is perfect for pastas or pizza night. Drink over the next couple years.

This is a terrific wine and one of the new releases from Montalcino that I happily include on a short list of top recommendations. The Argiano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very lively bouquet that is already singing despite the young age of this new release. The wine opens to a dark ruby color with garnet highlights. The bouquet shows a large span of wild berry, earth, licorice spice and medicinal herb aromas. This vintage also reveals a pretty floral character with dried rose potpourri and lavender buds. After fermentation, the wine is aged slowly for 30 months in large oak botte (including 10-, 30- and 50-hectoliter capacity), thus restricting oxygen and gently slowing its evolution. However, the 2015 vintage is naturally expressive and exuberant, and that's the main takeaway here.

The 2015 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva lifts up with a vibrant and spicy display, showing bright cherry and strawberry with mentholated herbal tones, crushed stone and a hint of white pepper. It takes a more savory turn on the palate, as silky textures usher in tart red and black berries, laced with salty minerals. Nervous acids add further tension, while grippy tannins slowly saturate, leading to an intensely structured finish. The 2015 Riserva will need a good amount of time to soften, and I don’t believe its fruit component will be able to keep up.

The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva captivates with a rich, intoxicating bouquet that mixes deep black cherry-berry with plum sauce, balsam herbs, chalk dust and hints of camphor. It fleshes out across the palate, a staining of primary fruits and spices seeming to coat all that it touches in youthful concentration. Zesty acidity creates a refreshing balance in spite of the grippy tannins that settle in toward the close. The result is a wine of poise, structure, but also remarkable length and energy, as tart currants and salty minerals mingle – and, somehow, leave the mouth watering for more. Bravo! The 2019 Solengo seduces with its richly decadent display of vanilla and mocha-tinged dark fruits and spices, which are wonderfully lifted by minty herbal tones and white smoke. This enters the palate like weighted velvet, smooth and fleshy at first, yet lively, as mineral-tinged black currants mix with fine-grained tannins, clamping down with youthful poise. Like the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove, this tapers off incredibly long and staining, with echoes of licorice beneath an air of cedar and tobacco; yet somehow, through it all, the palate is left watering for more. It will be many years before the 2019 is ready to show its best, but it will certainly be worth the wait. The Solengo is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese that spends eighteen months refining in a combination of 60% new to 40% second-pass barriques.

Italy has gone from strength to strength, with standards of winemaking improving all the time and more indigenous varietals than ever before reaching foreign markets. Every single region is a treasure trove of undiscovered gems worth exploring, while the more classic wines like Barolo and Brunello di Montalcino have more than caught up in quality with their French counterparts without catching up in price. A dizzying array of style and a natural affinity with food means there is really no need to look any further no matter the occasion.
