While the banks of the Mosel and the Rheingau are where Riesling rose to prominence, it is Australia that is helping fine wine fans fall back in love with this noble grape. Once a grape making up most expensive wine in the world, it can now offer some of the biggest bargains in fine wine - nowhere is this more clear than with the latest release from an Australian wine icon, the Peter Lehmann Wigan Riesling.
Already a six time winner of the International Wine and Spirit Competition's ‘Best Riesling in the World’, the Wigan 2015 was James Suckling's 'Best Value Wine of 2020'. Scoring a massive 98 points from JamesSuckling.com's Nick Stock and 96 points from James Halliday, but released at just over £16 per bottle IB, the quality-to-price ratio of this 'breathtakingly pure, yet complex and drinkable' (NS) Riesling is seriously rare in the modern wine world.
Giving off 'lemon-rind, lemon-butter and toasty aromas' (NS), the palate is incredibly smooth yet structured with the sort of glossy texture that can only be added from years of ageing in bottle. With 6 years of age already, this Eden Valley Riesling has already developed so much complexity in bottle that it is hard to see how it will develop further, 'yet it will, as every vintage of Wigan has demonstrated' (JH).
A venerated name in Australian wine, and the Barossa in particular, Lehmann pays homage to those who have helped him get his winery to where it is today with his Masters wine series.
Andrew Wigan was mentored by Peter Lehmann and was at his side when the winery was founded in 1979, ending up as chief winemaker for nearly 35 years. While Peter Lehmann’s reputation was built on Barossa Shiraz, Wigan's refinement of their whites was revolutionary for white winemaking not just for the estate but for Australia as a whole. His contribution to the Peter Lehmann story was recognised in 2003 with the re-naming of the revered ‘Reserve’ Riesling to the Wigan Riesling we have to offer today.
Offered at just £98 per case IB, there are too many positive words that could be used to describe the Peter Lehmann Wigan Riesling 2015; quality, prestige, consistency, pedigree, value... the list goes on. This is a wine that is helping Riesling reclaim the limelight it once had on the world stage and is doing so at an incredibly affordable price.
