James Suckling (97)Wow. This shows amazing aromas of cherries and berries with wet earth, hot stone and violets. Full body. Very dense and layered with hints of cream and floral undertones. The round and creamy tannins are so beautiful now. Intense center palate here. Hard not to drink now, but it will improve with time. Screw cap. |

While there is now a sort of old vine wine renaissance going on across the globe, Australia has long been the world leader in the getting the most out of their grapes from these beautiful, gnarled pieces of history.
Offering the amazing depth provided by older vines in combination with excellent value, the Tyrrell's Old Hillside Shiraz 2018 is 'a top wine' (Huon Hooke) for under £21 per bottle IB. Scoring 97 points from James Suckling and 95 points from The Real Review's Huon Hooke, it comes from the same vineyard as Tyrell's (over three times the price) 100 point Old Patch 2018 but is made from slightly younger vines.
A wine that wowed Suckling, this 'very dense and layered' Shiraz shows 'amazing aromas' of cherries and berries with wet earth, hot stone and violets. This 2018 has a more robust palate relative to the usual elegant Tyrrell style, offering positive tannins and 'firm but understated structure' (HH). While it is 'hard not to drink now' (JS), Hooke gives a drinking window up to 2043.
Tyrrell’s is part of the bedrock of Australian wine. Established back in 1858, by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, they are still proudly family owned over 160 years later. Now one of the most awarded wineries in Australia, they are still a shining light of the Hunter Valley all these years later.
Released at only £125 per case IB, the Tyrrell's Old Hillside Shiraz 2018 is a truly exceptional Hunter Valley Shiraz with quality far above its humble price point. Tyrell's have hit it out the park once again. Bravo!
