A wine style that has historically lost out on the spotlight to the reds of it's own region and whites from the likes of the Loire and Burgundy, Bordeaux's white wines are deservedly experiencing a strong resurgence at the moment. The best of them provide simply outstanding value given the quality, and nowhere is that more clear than with today’s offer of Puygueraud Blanc 2017.

A wine with 'so much character' according to James Suckling, but only costing £12.50 per bottle IB, it should be turning the heads of all white wine fans. Crafted by the revered winemaker Nicolas Thienpont, who is famously responsible for the success of Châteaux Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse and Pavie Macquin, he has produced this seriously impressive Sauvignon Blanc blend from his family property on the rocky Fronsac plateau.

Scoring 93 points from James Suckling plus 91 points from Jeb Dunnuck and Vinous's Antonio Galloni, it is 'terrific' in the eyes of Galloni as a 'both powerful and also remarkably pure' expression of white Bordeaux. Fermented in neutral oak, rather than steel as per the norm, it has 'more texture and depth' (AG) than many of it's more expensive rivals.

Puygueraud Blanc made its debut in 2013. In only five vintages the estate has really hit their stride with the 2017, justifying their focus on purely Sauvignon varieties from their north-facing, limestone slopes. Made from a blend of 85% Sauvignon Blanc and 15% Sauvignon Gris, the wine perfectly combines the minerality of their Loire-clone Sauvignon Blanc with the richness of the Sauvignon Gris.

Offered today at only £75 per case IB, this is bargain from Bordeaux and we can't agree more with Jeb Dunnuck when he states 'Readers looking for a terrific Bordeaux blanc should snatch up the 2017 Chateau Puygueraud Blanc'.
