Jancis Robinson (17)
Phenolic and pithy again, like the Blanchot. Quite stylised for Chablis – partly ‘naturalistic’, partly oxidative! It works though, and there's a bit of oak in the mix too. Not archetypal Chablis, but still impressive.Inc. VAT£333.49 -
Jancis Robinson (16.5)
Tangy, open-knit, fine apple fruit and broad texture. Much more conventional than their Vaudésir and Blanchot – and perhaps less interesting therefore?Inc. VAT£336.80 -
Burghound (93-96)
Ripe aromas include those of plum, dark cherry, warm earth and a whisper of the sauvage. The supple, delicious and dense big-bodied flavors flash enormous power and drive that really builds from the mid-palate to the explosively long and sappy finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. Note that this is very firmly structured and in need of at least a decade of keeping and should reward almost two.Inc. VAT£2,613.35 -
Burghound (93-95)
This too is firmly reduced. There is almost painful intensity to the beautifully delineated and mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that possess a highly refined textured before culminating in an almost crisp, moderately austere and wonderfully persistent finale that is quite firmly structured. This is a bit atypical but no less attractive for it and a Bèze that should amply reward a decade plus of cellaring. Lovely.Inc. VAT£2,673.35 -
(6x75cl) 2020Burghound (91-93)
Once again firm reduction buries the fruit and its nuances. There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the quite full-bodied flavors that possess almost as refined a texture though the underlying muscle seems more obvious on the sappy, austere and built-to-age finale. This is very Baudes in character with its robust yet reasonably refined delivering.Inc. VAT£971.15 -

Burghound (92-94)
Notably ripe yet nicely fresh and even cool aromas of poached plum and dark berry fruit coulis are trimmed in hints of earth and the sauvage. The palate impression of the big-bodied and powerful flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is actually nicely refined if dense whereas the wonderfully persistent finish is robust, muscular and borderline rustic, as well as exceptionally firm. Once again, I would recommend not touching a bottle for at least a decade and this beauty should repay almost two.Inc. VAT£847.49 -
(6x75cl) 2020Burghound (90-93)
Pungent aromas of wood and reduction lead to almost painfully intense middle weight flavors that also possess an appealing texture that is at once rich and nicely detailed, all wrapped in lingering finish that is appealingly complex. This is very pretty and while it will likely need 12-ish years to arrive at its apogee, it should be approachable after only 5 to 7.Inc. VAT£1,436.69 -
Burghound (90-92)
Here too the reduction is dense enough to hide the fruit. Otherwise, there is a caressing but punchy mouthfeel to the detailed and refined middle weight flavors that exude plenty of minerality on the mildly austere, firm and sneaky long finale. This is very Petits Vougeot in character with its elegant and understated style.Inc. VAT£1,202.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)
Three barrels, all new, from three different coopers, The Clos St-Denis will stay in barrel until the spring. 20% whole bunches. An impressive, saturated, purple colour. This has all the gorgeous heady qualities of the appellation. Exceptionally sensual yet with depth and structure. Now another immense burst of fruit on the back of the palate. Bilberries, blueberries and luscious raspberries. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£1,132.00 -
(6x75cl) 2023Vinous - Neal Martin (93-95)
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru includes 20% whole bunch this year. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with vivacious red berry fruit, superb delineation and a greater sense of mineralité than some of Tawse's other cuvées. The palate is medium-bodied, harmonious and silky smooth with pure red fruit notes and a poised, persistent finish. The 2022 was great, so is this.Inc. VAT£690.80 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-92)
A fully crimson ruby. Full sturdy red fruit on nose and palate, fills the mouth very well, with some tannins behind. A sturdy lower slope Gevrey which will age well. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£396.80 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (89-91)
From En la Poulotte (Couchey) and the better-known Les Longeroies, half and half. Mid ruby colour. The nose offers a very elegant floral pinot, there being a proportion of whole bunches. Lifted with light cherry fruit and a touch of orange zest. Given the lightness of tread of this Marsannay, there is delicious persistence. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£218.00 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
Though the grapes are purchased, the Marchand-Tawse team are responsible for the viticulture here, so it is effectively but not officially a domaine wine. Picked late in the piece, on 24th September, and vinified with 60% whole bunches, the Petite Charmotte is still in barrel with 30% new. A pretty pink ruby colour, extremely cheerful bouquet, whole bunch on the later picked fruit seems to have worked well. White pepper at the finish. Nothing forced, very harmonious, a little darker fruit but classy. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£498.80 -

Opening in the glass with aromas of cassis, plums, rose petals and sweet soil tones, the 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Mitans is medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins, concluding with a perfumed finish.Inc. VAT£1,483.00 -
(12x75cl) 2020Burghound (90-93)
Outstanding Top value. This is aromatically similar to the straight Volnay but with more evidence spice and floral elements. There is outstanding intensity to the dense and powerful flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the impressively long, balanced and firmly structured finale. This is absolutely terrific for its level and easily boxes above its weight.Inc. VAT£1,379.80 -

The Potel 2005 Vosne-Romanee Les Gaudichots offers a nose of cherry, red raspberry and spice box. Cinnamon and white pepper are among those that hitch a ride on the creamy palate, where intensely ripe, sweet red fruits, raw meat, and suggestions of caramelized root vegetables expand to fill all recesses of the mouth. Concentrated and complex manifestations of meat, roasted root vegetables, and mineral along with distilled red fruit suggestions inform the superbly long, multi-registered finish. Amazingly, there are three whole barrels of this.Inc. VAT£7,026.72 -

Nicolas Potel's négociant wine. 'No chaptalisation and no filtration therefore the most natural wines we've made for years. Some winemakers make a comparison with 2003 – but there were more than 100 days between flowering and picking in 2007 and 2008. 2007 was less delicate than we thought; I was tempted to bottle in September but found the wines were not ready.' Much more delicate than the Clos St-Denis. Wild strawberry fruit aromas plus delicate spice, and then more marked spice on the palate. All in a restrained and scented style and leading to a lingering finish and very fine tannins.Inc. VAT£3,435.20 -
(6x75cl) 2020Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)
A domaine wine. Pale clear lemon. This again has one of the toastier noses, the effect of the second elevage on full lees. The fruit explodes on the palate, pure ripe white apples if one has to specify but both the class and the texture are impeccable. And perfect aftertaste. A strong 4 stars, a candidate for five. Tasted: November 2021.Inc. VAT£1,844.44 -

The 2013 Clos de la Roche Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, from vines planted in 1905, has an inviting, delineated bouquet with vibrant wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and mineral notes. The palate has great tension – so suave and poised with superb symmetry and an effortless finish that I don’t think the Clos Saint Denis has at the moment. Laurent Ponsot did not disguise his enthusiasm for this Grand Cru and I could understand why.Inc. VAT£3,498.72 -
Wine Advocate (97)
The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée Vieilles Vignes is superb, bursting from the glass with aromas of juicy cherries, peonies, blood orange, licorice, raw cocoa and espresso roast. On the palate, it's full-bodied, deep and succulent, with a concentrated, layered mid-palate, satiny structuring tannins and vibrant underlying acidity, concluding with a long finish. Harvested on October 7 at a comparatively high yield by Ponsot's standards of 38 hectoliters per hectare, this year seems to have been perfectly adapted to Ponsot's style. Vibrant, elegant and expressive, the 2016 is quite different from the richer, more powerful 2015, but in the fullness of time, I wouldn't be surprised to see it surpassing its brawnier elder sibling.Inc. VAT£2,237.98 -

My favorite premier cru in the range this year is the 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of citrus oil, green apple, pear, oyster shell and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, taut and structured, with fine concentration and chalky extract, it concludes with a mouthwateringly saline finish.Inc. VAT£5,061.40 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (91-95)
Pale colour with green tints, very fresh, there is even a little bit of noble reduction. The 2018 Forêts delivers an absolutely scintillating, crystalline purity. There is impressive weight on the palate, balanced by a refreshing greener element to the fruit.Inc. VAT£1,912.69 -
Wine Advocate (90-92)
The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru comes from the Mazoyères side, with the vines averaging 60 years of age. I much prefer the bouquet here compared to the Echézeaux: well defined with good mineral tones, redcurrant and cranberry fruit with hints of undergrowth and even a tang of marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite structured for a Charmes-Chambertin with a solid, quite grippy finish that needs to muster a little more charm by the finish. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle.Inc. VAT£2,288.81 -
Relish in the exceptional quality of the Rene Bouvier Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2019, a masterpiece of traditional winemaking from one of Burgundy's most revered producers. Reminiscent of a love letter to the exquisite climatic conditions of the Charmes-Chambertin appellation, this French gem resonates with the nuanced nature of the region.
Produced by the third-generation winemaker, Philippe Bouvier, the wine captures centuries-old traditions in each sip. The grapes are selectively hand-picked from 60-year-old Pinot Noir vines that flourish in limestone-rich soil imbuing this Grand Cru with an inimitable character and sophistication.
Aging in fine-grained French oak barrels bestows this vintage with a silky texture and layered, complex flavours, enhancing its rich expression of ripe red fruits, spice, and evolving earthiness. This is a wine that proves that the Rene Bouvier Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 reflects the very soul of the terroir.
