Arnoux-Lachaux
Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux
Established in 1858, Arnoux-Lachaux is a family affair. Pascal Lachaux (son-in-law of the late Robert Arnoux) is the fifth generation making wine at this Domaine, which has significant grand Cru holdings. he is now working in the winery with his son Charles who has joined him after working in wine regions in New Zealand, South Africa and Oregon.
The Domaine’s wine has always been good but its quality and reputation are sharply rising. A new winery, cellar upgrade and acquisition of a parcel of the Grand Cru Latricieres Chambertin have all contributed.

Vinous (88-90)
The 2018 Nuit Saint-Georges Les Poisets comes from 0.7 hectares that this year produced just five barrels due to hail (14hl/ha). The nose feels a little disjointed at the moment, missing the focus that imbues Lachaux’s other 2018s. It needs to find more harmony during its élevage. The palate is medium-bodied with wild strawberry and cranberry fruit, firm tannins and a very pretty, pure finish that maybe just misses the length of other recent vintages I have tasted.Inc. VAT£2,804.00 -
(1x75cl) 2019Vinous (90)
The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Poisets, which was hailed 2018 and therefore pruned short to replenish its vigour in 2019, was cropped at 15hl/ha. It has a fresh, slightly earthy bouquet with dark berry fruit, Earl Grey and light cedar scents. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, quite pliant on the mouth with a hint of white pepper towards the finish with sour cherry on the aftertaste. Fine.Inc. VAT£1,469.60 -

Good deep red. Bright, less evolved aromas of black plum, currant and mint. Juicy, minty and fruit-driven; quite primary for the vintage. Lovely penetrating acids give the wine very good delineation and spine. Very long, pure finish features even, slow-mounting tannins and excellent vinosity and grip.Inc. VAT£1,600.13 -
(6x75cl) 1999Vinous (94+)
Red-ruby. Spicy black fruits, cocoa powder, violet and spices on the primary nose. A step up in volume, sweetness and depth from the Suchots, with very primary grapey, minerally flavors and hints of exotic fruits. As unevolved as this grand cru is today, it already shows lovely inner-mouth perfume. Very long and ripe on the back end, with the firm tannins covered by sappy fruits and spices.Inc. VAT£13,402.94 -
(3x150cl) 2005Burghound (96)
There is an all-but-invisible touch of brett present on the otherwise pretty and beautifully layered nose that features notes of various dark berries, violets and a wide range of spice elements. The gorgeously refined middle weight flavors possess a suave and silky mouth feel before culminating in a strikingly complex finish that seems to dance across the palate while delivering flat out huge length. This is still moderately firm yet with air it could easily be enjoyed now. Note that my score offers the benefit of the doubt regarding the brett as I have no other recent notes and thus I can't say whether this bottle was entirely representative.Inc. VAT£13,354.32 -

(1x300cl) 2008Wine Advocate (95)
Naturally Lachaux’s 2008 Romanee Saint-Vivant bats last in the Arnoux line-up, but in addition, this vintage it puts every wine that came before it in the collection into perspective, and all but the Reignots in the shade (not that as a group these weren’t already noir enough Pinots). Sumptuous black fruits accented by fruit pit piquancy; complex if to some extent ineffable, decadent forest floor and mineral notes; exotic spices, rich chocolate, and heady floral perfume – all are on display in this seamlessly-rich, already velvet-textured beauty whose structure is implicit but deeply-buried. Yet there is not an ounce of superfluous fat or a bit of superficial sweetness, and there is that vibratory resonance possessed by the exceptional wines of this vintage. There are around 140 cases of this – not a small quantity by the standards of top-notch grand cru Burgundy – though of course a bottle will cost you dearly. I suspect it will be among the last 2008s to still be seducing a few lucky wine lovers 25 or more years from now.Inc. VAT£11,518.60 -

Good full red. Vibrant perfume of raspberry, spices and minerals. Boasts outstanding dark berry intensity, with powerful crushed-stone minerality and a saline quality giving great energy and tension to the middle palate. Finishes with remarkable rising length, utterly suave tannins and superb lift. Like the Suchots, this is already wonderfully aromatic but is built for a decade or two of improvement in bottle.Inc. Burghound (96)
The strikingly elegant nose offers the most complexity of these 2012s with its well-layered aromas of spice, plum, violet, dark cherry and sandalwood. There is a beguilingly velvety texture to the lightly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that possess plenty of mouth coating dry extract before terminating in a firm and impeccably well-balanced finish. Note that this classy beauty will also require ample patience.Inc. VAT£8,129.52 -

(50% vendange entier; 100% new oak; bottled the same day as the Suchots, in May of 2015): Bright dark red. Tighter and darker on the nose than the Suchots, hinting at black fruits, licorice, minerals and flowers. Also less sweet in the mouth but already delivers outstanding tension and definition, with the dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors complicated by an element of noble herbs. The superb palate-staining finish features firm, suave tannins and outstanding subtle persistence. This aristocratic wine will need more patience than the Suchots but should ultimately surpass it.Inc. VAT£987.72 -

The 2018 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru, which comprises three-and-a-half barrels this year, has a highly perfumed, floral bouquet with pressed iris petals and incense infusing the intense black fruit. The medium-bodied palate features slightly chalky tannins. Very fresh and lively, with a powerful, mineral-driven finish that belies the warm vintage. This a cool, calm and collected Romanée-Saint-Vivant.Inc. VAT£10,537.15 -

The 2019 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is blessed with a bewitching bouquet with intense red fruit, crushed stone, pressed rose petals. There is a sorbet-like vitality to this Grand Cru, very well balanced with impressive depth. There is a slight savoriness that develops with time, almost Grands-Echézeaux-like in style with a very persistent finish. This is absolutely divine.Inc. VAT£7,072.40 -

Medium red. Raspberry, currant, plum, chocolate and espresso on the nose, with a leesy complexity. Sweet and fleshy but fresh, with good underlying mineral spine. Builds slowly on the back. A suave, subtle wine that should develop nicely in bottle.Inc. VAT£3,834.80 -

(just two and a half barrels made) Deep, bright red. Subdued but vibrant aromas of black raspberry, mint and bitter chocolate. Finishes with a mounting floral perfume.Inc. VAT£4,493.60 -

Healthy dark red. Sexy, soil-driven nose melds raspberry, spices, herbs and smoky minerals. Plush, fine-grained and sweet yet somehow light on its feet; like the 2016 version, this has a very high pH around 3.9 but its savory minerality and stem element give it sufficient energy and lift. A wonderfully seamless ripe-but-dry wine with a very long, rising finish featuring refined tannins and lingering black cherry and licorice notes.Inc. VAT£5,092.32 -

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru comes from a tiny 0.2-ha parcel. It has a vivacious and perfumed bouquet, damp earth and black stewed tea developing with time. The palate is resplendent with raspberry and cranberry fruit, refined with edgy tannin and an exceedingly sustained finish that lasts for more than 60 seconds. The nobility of this Premier Cru, just above La Romanée, really shines through.Inc. VAT£7,042.46 -

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru expresses the whole-bunch contribution as much as any other 2018 from Lachaux. It is almost Dujac-like in style, displaying fine delineation and a compelling earthy quality. The well-balanced palate is very tight at the moment, offering strict tannins and modest depth. Linear and precise, revealing hints of brown spice and cola toward the complex finish. Quite an uncompromising wine in some ways, but one that is utterly absorbing. Just two barrels made.Inc. The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru comes from an expanded parcel, the "extension" only planted (at 16,000 vines per hectare) in 2015 after being fallow for over a century. The total area is 0.1854-hectares. It has a brilliantly defined bouquet with vivid red fruit, crushed limestone and crushed rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, lithe tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit. Slightly granular in texture, hints of hoisin toward the finish with a long saline aftertaste. This squares up to the RSV and questions its superiority...it's that good.Inc. VAT£5,137.73 -
(2x75cl) 2005Vinous (93)
Deep red. Smoky red and black fruit aromas are complicated by licorice and minerals. Highly concentrated, sweet and deep, with a medicinal quality to its black fruit flavors. A wonderfully seamless wine with terrific pinot sap. Finishes with superb ripe, spreading tannins. Widespread millerandage here has yielded a wine with terrific volume, but there's nothing heavy about it.Inc. VAT£832.09 -

Bright, dark red with ruby highlights. Classic aromas of dark berries, licorice and minerals. Juicy and tight-grained, even youthfully imploded, with a serious structure and a restrained sweetness to the flavors of dark cherry, minerals, violet and licorice. Deep red with ruby tones. Complex aromas of dark berries, flowers and spices, complemented by sweet oak and lifted by a peppery nuance. Not a fleshy wine but juicy, firm and aromatic, with lovely balancing acidity giving the wine vibrancy. Not the last word in concentration but finishes with sweet tannins and very good length. Pascal Lachaux noted that in most of his premier and grand crus, he made more wine in 2008 than in either 2009 or 2007.Inc. VAT£304.13 -
