Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques has a stunning, pure, life-affirming bouquet that is just pure class and delivers exactly what you expect from a vineyard of this caliber (and price!). The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, pure red berry fruit tinged with spice and a hint of Seville orange marmalade. The tannins are filigree and the harmony toward the finish makes you giddy. This is a fabulous Clos Saint Jacques from Bruno Clair that challenges Rousseau as the pick of the five growers this year. Tasted September 2017.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is very complex on the nose with mostly red fruit intermingling with crushed stone, black truffle and light cedar aromas. It feels very assured. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain but quite firm tannins, complex with fine acidity and hints of marmalade and clove tincturing the red fruit towards the finish. Superb - but will it surpass the 2018?

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (96-98)

5 Star Wine. Glowing mid purple. A very gorgeous bouquet, brilliant purity, has been like this all the way through. Not looking for descriptive words here, this is immaculate and has retained delicacy. Very long, very fine with some rose petals at the finish. Delicacy with tensile strength. No sign of a second-class vintage here!

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-97)

Glowing purple. The bouquet is absolutely regal. What else to say? The palate offers a fantastic complexity varying from the sweetness of perfect ripeness through to a more savoury character from the terroir. The length of flavour transcends anything else. Gracefulness personified. Drink from 2032-2040.

Energy and grace meld together in Clair's 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers. Floral and lifted on the outset, the 2012 shows remarkable energy through the mid-palate and finish, with gorgeous density and plenty of punch. In short, the 2012 has it all; gorgeous aromatics and enough density to develop for a good 25+ years.

Medium red. Sexy aromas of strawberry and earthy underbrush. Juicy and alive in the mouth, with its wild red berry flavors complicated by herbs and pepper. Conveys good energy for its relatively high pH, as well as noteworthy depth and breadth. Round but not at all flat, this Cazetiers finishes with ripe tannins and good thrust.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a beautifully defined, elegant bouquet of disarming purity – a real charmer. The palate is very well balanced, demonstrating assiduous use of stems. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet of rose petal and potpourri scents enmeshed with raspberry preserve and strawberry. The palate is very fresh on the entry, offering superb tannins, wonderful acidity and great cohesion toward the mineral-rich finish. This is a stupendous wine that will age for 20–30 years.

The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle comes across as cool, mineral and closed in on itself. Still, it reveals gorgeous textural finesse and fabulous overall balance. The 2010 floats on the palate with an effortless expression of fruit that is truly remarkable. Deep layers of spices wrap around the sensual finish. This is another fabulous wine from Bruno Clair.

Imposing and structured today, the 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru is built on spine of serious tannin that gives the wine much of its personality. The 2013 finishes with substantial weight and a burst of dark fruit. This burly, powerful Burgundy is going to need time to come together.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petit Chapelle comes from the domaine's smallest holding at 0.25-hectares. It has a pure, tightly wound bouquet with black cherries and strawberry pastilles, floral tones emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is good nervosité here, tangible mineralité with impressive persistence on the finish. Very feminine and beguiling, this wine will only require a couple of years in bottle but it has the pedigree and substance to age with style.

(36 hectoliters per hectare produced): Bright medium red. Darker on the nose than the Clos du Fontenys, offering scents of black cherry, blackberry and licorice. Then juicier, more minerally and higher-pitched in the mouth; a step up in energy from the Clos du Fontenys, despite the fact that this vineyard is situated lower on the hillside. Not geologically logical, noted Bruno Clair--in much the same way that frost damage was often worse on the hillsides than on flat land and bewilderingly haphazard in general. Finishes with a positive medicinal reserve and firm but ripe tannins.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru has an expressive bouquet of ample red berry fruit, hints of rose petal and just a touch of vanilla pod. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, lithe tannins. A pliant, silky-smooth La Petite Chapelle with a harmonious, sensual finish. This wine has ambition.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Petite Chapelle 1er Cru is the smallest cuvée of the domaine, just 4 or 5 barrels each year. It has fine focus and intensity with blackberry, briary and freshly tilled soil. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, crisp and fresh with a crunchy textured, edgy finish. Elegant and full of tension, it should drink well for 12 to 15 years.

Burghound (91-94)

(Sweet Spot) (from a .25 ha parcel that is located on the southern side of the vineyard near En Ergot). Here there is sufficient reduction to blur the nuances of what are clearly floral-suffused red berry aromas. There is excellent freshness and verve to the intensely mineral-driven middle weight flavors that terminate in a linear, chiseled, austere and very serious finale. This is beautiful but it’s also a ‘buy and forget you own it’ wine.

The 2021 Marsannay Les Grasses Têtes has the most powerful bouquet amongst Clair's Marsannays, though the Longeroies has more mineralité and complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly candied entry - desiccated orange peel mixed with allspice, the finish just a little disjointed at the moment.
