Cavallotto
About Cavallotto
Cavallotto has not (yet) gained the international recognition that it is due. They were one of the early pioneers crafting single-vineyard wines in Barolo DOCG. A benchmark producer of the region in the eyes of Monica Larner (Wine Advocate), Cavallotto is a traditional family estate founded all the way back in 1948. After 4 generations of unbroken familial ownership, the estate is currently run by Laura, Giuseppe and Alfio Cavallotto.
Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis San Giuseppe is the top wine of the estate.

Young and still very strapping, the 2008 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is quite the powerhouse. Lavender, tobacco and licorice weave through a core of beautifully layered, dark-toned fruit. Tonight, the 2008 is exceptionally beautiful, vivid and polished. The only issue with the 2008 vintage is that it is surrounded by years that yielded more overt Barolos, specifically 2006 and 2010. The 2008 San Giuseppe was gorgeous upon release, just as it is tonight. Tasted from magnum.Inc. VAT£899.98 -

The 2010 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is just starting to show the first signs of aromatic development, which makes it a fine choice for drinking now or within the next few years. On the palate it is powerful and ample, with notable tannic heft and structure to burn. The expression of Nebbiolo is super-classic all the way. It’s one of my favorite wines of the evening. Wine Advocate (95)
The Cavallotto 2011 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe is an exceptional wine that really shows the best of Castiglione Falletto, home to some of Barolo's most consistent and age-worthy wines. This bottle offers enormous complexity coupled by power and linear, classic lines. Maceration stopped at 20 days, otherwise the winemaking team feared the results would be overdone and too bold. The bouquet opens quickly to reveal dark fruit, spice, anise seed and licorice. The effect is ethereal and lasting. It would be hard to pin this wine down as being from the warm 2011 vintage in a blind tasting. The acidity is fresh and nicely folded into the background.Inc. VAT£164.80 -

Firm but noble tannins provide the framework and bestow impressive aging potential.Inc. VAT£264.79 -

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows why this is such a tremendous vintage. Potent, searing tannins paint the picture of a youthful, classically austere Barolo that is heading into its second decade in style. Graphite, grilled herbs, tar, sage, tobacco, incense and lavender race across the palate. The 2013 can be enjoyed now with aeration, but ideally it needs more time in bottle.Inc. VAT£307.99 -

Cavallotto's 2007 Barolo Riserva Vignolo is opulent and racy in the glass. The ripe style of the year might be too much for classicists, but there is an intensity to the Vignolo that is hard to resist. There is nothing intellectual or ponderous here, just a big, voluptuous Barolo that captures the personality of the vintage. Even with all of its obvious resonance and generosity, the tannins remain very much present, which suggests the 2007 has many years of fine drinking head of it.Inc. VAT£148.13 -

A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Barolo Riserva Vignolo has nevertheless preserved good freshness for the year. The breadth and amplitude of the vintage comes through, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. Readers can look forward to another 20 years of fine drinking. This is very nicely done.Inc. (1x75cl) 2013Wine Advocate (95)
The 2013 Barolo Riserva Vignolo surprises for the sheer darkness and saturation of its color. Upfront and without too much bother, the wine offers immediate richness and concentration with dark berry fruit, plum and dried cherry. There is a lot of intensity here, but the wine is more horizontal and broad in character than it is vertical per se. In other words, it shows a heavy center of gravity, and its very character is focused on richness and power. This wine ages in 20- and 100-hectoliter Slavonian oak botti for up to five years before its commercial release. Production is exactly 6,666 bottles.Inc. VAT£140.00 -
