Domaine Chanson
Domaine Chanson
Established in 1750, Chanson is one of the oldest Maisons of Beaune as well as one of the larger owners of Beaune Premier Cru vineyards in Burgundy. After a short period of mid-table mediocrity in the 1980s, Chanson was acquired by Champagne Bollinger who have since invested heavily in this estate, precipitating a steady march up the ranks of Burgundy producers.
Chanson was acquired by the Bollinger family back in 1999 following which they appointed Gilles de Courcel, whose family own and run the famous estate in Pommard, Domaine de Courcel, to run the business. In addition, the wines were being made under the watchful eye of Jean-Pierre Confuron of Domaine Confuron-Cotetidot in Vosne Romanée. With this new team in place, considerable improvements were made which has seen the quality soar here.

The 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Fèves offers up aromas of dark berry fruit, baking chocolate, potpourri, exotic spices and smoked meats, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate with powdery structuring tannins and a generous core of sapid fruit. This is a strong showing for this Chandon monopole.Inc. VAT£124.13 -

The 2018 Beaune Clos des Fèves 1er Cru offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the pretty, well-defined nose, which shows more Pinoté than its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and fine acidity. Quite harmonious, with a lush but controlled finish. Not quite as good as the Clos des Mouches, but not far off.Inc. VAT£142.79 -

The 2020 Beaune Clos des Fèves 1er Cru has quite a rich nose with a bit too much VA for my liking, obscuring some of the fruit. The palate is chewy on the entry with plenty of dark fruit but there is a slightly roasted element on the finish that detracts from its freshness. Cumbersome.Inc. VAT£319.18 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)
5 Star Wines A beautiful full fresh purple. The nose is exquisite even in the large-scale eyes of the vintage. This is a luxurious and noble Beaune with very good acidity. The deep, dark raspberry fruit absolutely fills the palate, the tannins still need to refine with the second half of the elevage but the finish promises a very fine wine. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted: October 2023.Inc. VAT£435.20 -

North part of Chassagne, they have 2 hectares. Rocky soil with lots of limestone. Linear, bright and mineral with a citrus fruit core and a bit of spicy oak. There’s a tiny hint of bitterness under the fruit. Has a bit of pineapple and pear richness, too, and some hazelnut. Lovely focus.Inc. VAT£538.32 -

This delicious white Corton has an almost Montrachet-like richness and depth of flavour, with its aromas of ripe apple, quince, cream and spice. The texture is luxurious, almost decadent, but the balanced acidity and extract carry it to an alluringly long finish. The domaine owns 0.65 hectares down the slope from Le Rognet et Corton in Ladoix that face due east; the grapes are carefully sorted, pressed as whole clusters, and fermented in cask (one-quarter new). This wine should open nicely in five years and will drink well for a further 20.Inc. VAT£564.80 -

Still in barrel. Mid lemon yellow. Sitting back on its haunches. Clearly a significant bench of white fruit with just a touch of citrus. Concentrated, as yet undeveloped, an attractive greener touch to the fruit further back, complex and well worthy of its grand cru status. Very long finish. Drink from 2030-2038. Tasted Oct 2024.Expected Price Range£409 - £500 -

An even fuller yellow and an even more luxuriant nose, as Clos des Mouches cannot help. I still haven’t understood just why this vineyard should make such opulent, creamily textured wines. The oak is for me just a little bit too present but it should sort itself out after a light bentonite fining and filtering. Good acidity. Plenty of wine to work with here! Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: October 2023.Inc. VAT£545.60 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-93)
Still in barrel. Mid lemon yellow. There is that custard cream note from the barrel which will be refined later. But it is also the style of this vineyard, with its extra weight and spice. Still a work in progress but heading in the right direction. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2024.Inc. VAT£542.00 -

The 2023 Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 1er Cru shows the stem influence like the Les Grèves, although that's better assimilated here and complements the fruit profile. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, not complex yet balanced. It is harmonious on the finish with just a touch of spice. Fine, but not long-term.Inc. VAT£481.49 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (86-88)
The 2023 Beaune Les Teurons 1er Cru has a feisty bouquet with Morello cherries, crushed strawberry and light orange zest scents. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, intense with small red cherries and raspberry coulis. A little warmth just blurs the definition toward the finish. Early-drinking.Inc. VAT£264.29 -

Powerful and structured, this wine is dark with black fruits. The rich fruit and acidity are surrounded by firm tannins provide a solid scaffolding. With acidity and tannins at the end, this complex wine will age slowly, so don't drink before 2022.Inc. VAT£934.69 -
