Domenico Clerico
About Domenico Clerico
Clerico rose to become a "giant of Barolo" (Decanter), having started to produce wine in 1979 after taking over his father’s vineyard three years earlier and today this small but historic estate is now managed by winemaker and General Director Oscar Arrivabene. The winery is now one of the most respected names in all Barolo not only for their extremely high-quality wines but also for showcasing exceptional expression of the terroirs of their outstanding vineyard holdings in four of the greatest Crus of Monforte; Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana and Mosconi.

Dark ruby. Clerico's 1999 Pajana is simply an outrageous wine. It explodes out of the glass with an aromatic nose and masses of heady, sumptuous dark fruit, prune, plum and licorice sensations that burst onto the palate in an extraordinary expression of Nebbiolo that leaves me speechless. An awesome effort and a benchmark wine for the appellation. Highly recommended.Inc. VAT£1,159.61 -
(12x75cl) 2001Vinous (93)
This strong series continues with the 2001 Barolo Pajana. It too is a deeply-colored effort, with notes of violets, minerals and tar that appear out of the glass. The lower altititude of the vineyard gives a wine that is perhaps a touch less complex aromatically but that is quite rich, round and soft on the palate with generous amounts of very ripe black fruit, chocolate and toasted oak flavors supported by notable structure and finishing with excellent length.Inc. Aromas of blackberry, plum skin and hints of cut wood. Full-bodied, chewy and very rich, with lots of tannins, French oak and fruit. This is dense and concentrated. Layered. Needs time. Best after 2012. 680 cases made. -JSInc. VAT£1,283.21 -

Pajana represents the lower end of the same site that produces fruit for the Barolo Ciabot Mentin. The soils are a bit looser here and the temperatures are just a few fractions higher at this site. Winemaking for the 2013 Barolo Pajana sees 20 days of skin maceration, and malolactic fermentation in this vintage was done in oak (otherwise that second fermentation occurs in stainless steel). The idea, of course, is to work without oxygen, but if the malolactic fermentations are slow, the wine goes into wood, as is the case here. The wine later ages in barrique for 16 months with another 16 months in botte grande. The bouquet offers delicate layers of mineral and flint with dark fruit and spice neatly folded into its thick texture. Both the Barolo Pajana and the Barolo Ciabot Mentin are released one year after their peers.Inc. VAT£380.38 -

The Pajana vineyard is known for its loose, sandy soils and red-colored earth, and the 2014 growing season brought cool and wet conditions. This cru is a nice, loyal expression of those Nebbiolo grapes. The 2014 Barolo Pajana is dark and thickly structured, and probably more accessible overall. This wine can be enjoyed in the medium-term, after five years (more or less) of cellar time. It saw 16 months in barrique, another 16 months in botte grande and a couple of years in the bottle.Inc. (1x75cl) 2015Wine Advocate - Robert Parker (96+)
The Domenico Clerico 2015 Barolo Pajana opens to a beautifully saturated color with dark garnet and ruby highlights. Compared to the 2016 vintage that I tasted at the same time, this wine is more robust, structured and deeper. In some cases, I prefer 2016 to 2015, but this is one case in which the warmer vintage ushers forth a special and very attractive level of intensity. The bouquet is layered, multifaceted and fluid. Despite the many adjectives you could use to describe the bouquet, one thing does not change and that is the sheer intensity of this impressive Barolo Pajana.Inc. VAT£97.60 -
(1x75cl) 2016Vinous (90.5)
The 2016 Barolo Pajana is ample, powerful and resonant, with terrific body and a real sense of expansiveness that builds with time in the glass. Sweet spice, citrus and floral overtones add brightness to this attractive, mid-weight Barolo. The 2016 is deep and yet also tannic. I would prefer to cellar it for at least a few years.Inc. Aged in all new barriques Full red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of red berries and oak spices. Chewy, lush and strong in extract, but, unlike the Ginestra, this already shows compelling sweetness and thickness. A sexy wine of great class. Offers a real peacock tail of a finish. Very full and very long, with utterly suave, fine tannins.Inc. VAT£1,505.21 -

Deep, bright red. Sappy aromas of kirsch, mocha, tobacco, licorice and spicy, roasted oak. Sweet and thick but with lovely vibrancy and delineation. This has remarkably penetrating fruit and terrific grip. Finishes strong and long; the wine's firm tannins will require a good six or seven years of additional bottle aging. But promises to be one of the stars of the vintage.Inc. VAT£1,100.81 -

The 2011 Barolo Percristina is an attractive wine that has aged quite well over the last decade, which is a major step forward. Succulent dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, menthol, espresso, spice and blood orange flesh out in a supple, juicy Barolo from Clerico. In 2011, Percristina is quite a bit more laid back and less concentrated than in previous years. It is also impeccably balanced and a pure joy to taste today. Drink it over the next handful of years.Inc. VAT£151.60 -
