Weingut Dönnhoff
About Weingut Dönnhoff
Weingut Dönnhoff is the best estates in Germany going toe-to-toe with the top names of Burgundy and Bordeaux. Owner Helmut Dönnhoff is a living legend. Started in 1971 with 4 hectares he now has 20. He attributes his success to "making wine for himself" rather than purely commercial reasons. His passion and expertise produce wine that boasts mouthwatering sensations and delicious minerality. It's no surprise his are among the most in-demand wines in the world.
Once described by Neal Martin (Vinous) as Germany’s equivalent of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of its imperious standing amongst Riesling producers, today’s offer is utterly unmissable for all serious devotees of both German wine and the world’s most aristocratic white varietal.

The 2022 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Auslese takes a while to open up. Finally, it does with a serene sense of ripe apricot, followed by a lovely citrus spectrum, ranging from lime and lemon, the merest overtone of candied lemon to tangerine with some crushed chamomile thrown in. Again, the palate is defined by Riesling rather than botrytis, bringing a rich but toned sweetness, intense, stealing your heart with its stealthy charm. It's fluid, smooth, serene, bright and laden with citrus and grapefruit spice on the long finish. (Sweet)Inc. VAT£110.06 -

(1x75cl) 2013Vinous (90)
White peach, pine nuts and oyster shell on the nose, along with a twist of lemon balm. A crisp passion fruit flavor drives the wine forward on the nicely structured palate. Boasts a succulent texture, good weight and appealing depth, along with a tantalizingly spicy finish. This is generally the most masculine of the estate's dry Rieslings, and it is certainly the most closed today.Inc. VAT£152.93 -
(1x75cl) 2014Vinous (94)
A haunting nose mingles buddleia and almond extract with intimations of the white peach, Meyer lemon and grapefruit that then juicily and bracingly saturate the palate. A stony undertone, hints of iodine, and a glowing alliance of cyanic peach kernel and almond lend intrigue if also a touch of austerity, leading into a terrifically sustained and multifaceted finish capped by mouthwatering salinity. As with the corresponding Dellchen, I have little doubt that this will improve in bottle, but that doesn’t mean one should deny oneself the succulent and refreshing as well as complex pleasure of drinking a youthful bottle or two.Inc. VAT£152.93 -
Vinous (95)
Bittersweet, smoky herbal and nutty notes, along with an ore-like sense of deep mineral earthiness, serve as ideal foils for generously juicy ripe white peach and bright Meyer lemon. The feel is full and firm, and the finish is superbly multileveled, but with a strong emphasis on darkly earthy and minerally low-tones whose resonance sets the tongue and tonsils quivering. (And yes, it also refreshes.)Inc. VAT£109.19 -

Vinous (96-98)
The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Grosses Gewächs, from a south-facing shale site with just a few calcareous veins, is golden in color. The vines were planted in 1949, and they now bring just small yields of tiny berries with a different pulp/skin ratio. A gorgeous lift tells of citrus zest, with an ethereal touch of crushed citrus leaf and spicier herb. The palate is crystalline. It's a clear-cut, taut, pure vision of stone and citrus. This is a pure, poised, precise and concentrated wine. Time and again, it is astonishing that so much flavor, stone and energy can be captured in a wine of such taut proportions at 12.5% alcohol. What an experience! There is no reliance on power, volume or fat, just slenderness, elegance and essence. (Bone-dry)Inc. VAT£549.49 -
(6x150cl) 2009Vinous (91+)
Tantalizing aromas of papaya, sweet herbs and incense. A discreet but intense apricot flavor rises from the mid-palate, accompanied by a subtle acidity. Animated, finely spiced spatlese with a deep, long finish. I may be underrating this.Inc. VAT£730.56 -
Wine Advocate (96)
A riveting, high-toned aromatic diversity announces the Donnhoff 2011 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese with themes that inform an at once creamy yet subtly tannic and vibrant palate: quince, pear, lychee, nut oils, fusel oils, distilled herbal essences, brown spices, and smoky black tea. This behaves as if a bit of Traminer had been blended-in. The rich nuttiness and glaze of honey as well as sheer succulence of fruit make for a more opulent performance than that of Brucke, but to say that this is less energetic or dynamic would be misleading. Its incessant interplay of elements is utterly kaleidoscopic – just more calmly harmonious than the Spatlese from next door. Like that sibling, this deserves to be followed for a good quarter-century.Inc. VAT£502.56 -

From an old parcel in the Hermannshöhle whose vines are still single post-trained, this auctioned bottling (representing the contents of a 600-liter Halbstück) delivers a highly aromatic and luscious amalgam of white peach, pink grapefruit and Persian melon not unlike that familiar from its A.P. #12 counterpart. Suggestions of nut pastes complemented by candied citrus rind are also present. But this boasts a yet creamier texture, greater delicacy, and a more complex and mouthwatering mineral savor, allied to raw scallop-like sweetness and salinity.Inc. VAT£122.34 -

Most people who drink wine know what a ripe peach tastes like. However, this wine gives you a completely new appreciation of the meaning of the word “peach”. Beyond that, it possesses subtlety that is extremely rare anywhere in the world of food and wine. From organically grown grapes. Fair'n Green certification. Absolutely delicious now, but could be held for decades.Inc. VAT£434.05 -

Hit me with a flower! This starts very delicately with an incredibly subtle nose of fresh and dried flowers. Then comes the enormously concentrated yet totally filigree palate, which dazzles the senses with its thousand nuances and almost endless, super-silky finish. Decades of aging potential. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.Inc. VAT£387.25 -

This shimmers like gold, and the succulence of this wine makes it extremely hard not to swallow, then to immediately reach for the bottle. Very dense and complex, with a level of energy that makes you wonder where it comes from and how this could be possible. Super-long finish that’s so intense and delicate. From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold.Inc. VAT£394.82 -

This starts very quietly and gently with a wafting cloud of floral aromas, but then your gaze is pulled into the base of this Gothic cathedral window, pulling you ever further upward until you are staring at the heavens. Supernatural energy and vitality, the wet stone character cascading over your palate at the super-long finish. Doesn’t want to stop! From organically grown grapes with Fair'n Green certification. The 2018 Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese is perfectly clear and fresh but still intense and concentrated on the spicy and complex nose. Lush and piquant on the palate, this is a fresh, stunningly pure and playful Brücke that is singing and dancing on the knife's edge. Fabulous in its purity, tension and finesse. Nevertheless, there is the ripeness you can expect from an Auslese. Tasted in July 2019.Inc. VAT£95.66
