    About Domaine Drouhin-Laroze

Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, Drouhin-Laroze owns an impressive range of Grand Cru across the Cote d’Or. Philippe Drouhin is helped by his daughter Caroline reducing the oak to focus on the excellent fruit they have at their fingertips. The style of Drouhin-Laroze sits between the modern and traditional style; the extraction and use of oak are moderate here.

    Wine Advocate (88-90)

The 2013 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has plenty of lilting dark plum and strawberry fruit on the nose, nicely defined and pure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple coffee-tinged black fruit, the Seguin Moreau oak coming on quite strong toward the finish that slightly obscures the terroir expression. Like some of the other of Drouhin-Laroze's 2013s, last year's offering was showing much better.

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru matures with 25% whole bunches and in 80% new wood. It has quite an intense bouquet with small black cherry, blackcurrant and subtle pressed iris flower scents. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, very cohesive in the mouth. The wood integrates nicely on the finish even if I would have just dialed it down. Maybe a little more personality on the finish is needed to get up there with the best from this Grand Cru.

Domaine Drouhin-Laroze has some of the best sites in the Cote d’Or. The Clos de Vougeot 2011 has an exciting intensity throughout that engulfs the palate and exudes power on the long crafted finish. Plenty of wood and warm earth gives great balance to the very fresh red fruit.

Good medium-deep red. Aromas of black cherry, raspberry, minerals and flowers are complemented by pungent sweet oak. Juicy, spicy, savory Clos Vougeot with good tautness and saline soil complexity. The dark cherry fruit is complicated by musky hints of leather and game and sweetened by the spicy oak element. I like the sugar/acid balance here and the substantial dusty tannins are ripe and harmonious. This classic, soil-driven Clos Vougeot finishes with notes of minerals, herbs and dried flowers.

    Wine Advocate (93-95)

The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, which comes from the upper slopes of the vineyard, has a rich and opulent bouquet with precocious mulberry and blueberry scents, violet and desiccated orange peel. The 30% whole bunches is discretely embedded in the black fruit, lending crunchiness to the texture. This displays impressive depth; notwithstanding infectious energy and a vibrant finish. Excellent - this is one of the best grand crus from Drouhin-Laroze this vintage.

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru includes 35% whole bunch fruit (the first time ever) and was cropped at just 25 hectoliters per hectare because of frost damage. It has an attractive bouquet with copious dark cherry, blackberry and crushed flowers. The palate is well balanced with fine tannin, quite a masculine Clos Vougeot with a good backbone on the somewhat foursquare finish that just cuts away a little swiftly. This might be one cuvée where I prefer the 2015 to this year's counterpart.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is completely de-stemmed and matures in 80% new oak. It has an expressive and aromatic bouquet with pretty blueberry, raspberry and iodine aromas that burst from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very effervescent from the start with vivid red and black fruit infused with orange zest and light fig notes. Very fine.

    Vinous (94)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru had the highest sugar levels in this vintage, so this was the first cuvée to be picked on 24 August. It has a very expressive nose, very pure and without any stems, it still imparts an attractive spiciness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, nicely poised with a harmonious and mineral-driven finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru has a fresh red berry nose laced with orange blossom and light marmalade notes. The fresh palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, crunchy black fruit and quite a lot of wood tannins on the finish. They will become more enmeshed once racked. Fine.

    Vinous (91)

Due to the vigour of this parcel, the Domaine undertook a green harvest in making their 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru. It is fragrant and pure on the nose: blackberry, raspberry and light wild strawberry scents comingle, just a touch of vanilla emanating from the oak (60%). The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, the 40% whole bunch imparting pleasant white pepper and bay leaf notes that lends another dimension on the juicy finish. This is well worth looking out for.

    Vinous (88-90)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru underwent some green harvest to improve the grape maturity. It has a light but focused nose - a mélange of red and black fruit with touches of sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well balanced with nicely judged acidity. Modest length, this is a well-crafted Gevrey for more early drinking.

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is completely de-stemmed, as the domaine felt that the wine already came with sufficient natural spiciness. It has a very classy bouquet of copious red cherry and raspberry fruit, becoming a little darker with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, impressive symmetry and an elegant finish. This is the kind of wine that is becoming more synonymous with the domaine since their change of modus operandi. Superb.

Good full medium red. Musky dark raspberry, strawberry, underbrush and crushed rock on the nose, plus hints of pepper, leather and spicy oak. Dense, juicy and penetrating but not at all hard, with strong smoky limestone minerality carrying through to a very long, saline aftertaste featuring serious ripe tannins that turned a bit edgy with air. The wine's saline element is nicely supported by its wild red berry fruit.
