Fontaine-Gagnard
About Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard
Fontaine-Gagnard is the true Burgundian love affair. Its story began in the 1980s with the marriage of Richard Fontaine and Laurence Gagnard. Since 2007, Celine Fontaine has been taking more control of the winemaking from her father and the wines have been surging ahead over the past few years.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard has seen a stratospheric rise in quality and acclaim over the last decade, excelling in the outstanding 2014 and 2017 vintages. The wines have a fantastic purity and minerality allied to a lovely weight and richness of fruit. This is a very smart and stylish Domaine making some of the most sought-after wines from Chassagne-Montrachet, boasting a fantastic intensity of fruit that beautifully expresses their top-notch terroir.

The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet Maltroye 1er Cru has a "buttoned-down" nose that demands coaxing to reveal its yellow fruit, hazelnut and light orange rind scents. The palate is well balanced and opens up wonderfully with aeration, displaying a touch of orange rind, spice and smokiness on the finish. It's quite mercurial and, to my senses, fascinating.Inc. The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru has quite an intense bouquet although it is missing a little terroir expression at the moment. The palate is rounded and honeyed, one of the richest cuvées but thankfully balanced with acidity, quite nutty towards the finish. Probably more short term than other vintages.Inc. VAT£177.72 -

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with yellow fruit, white peach and pressed white flower aromas. The palate is well balanced with fine salinity, quite linear and reserved at first, yet the intensity is delivered on the back end with a vivacious, stem ginger-tinged finish that leaves the mouth tingling. Superb.Inc. VAT£230.00 -

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru was quite closed on the nose when I tasted it, though I feel there is concentration here. The palate is where that concentration is revealed: quite focused, real depth with a persistent, stem ginger and slightly peachy finish. Excellent.Inc. VAT£184.13 -

Wipe your tears because this is the last vintage of Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru for now; the vines were pulled up after the harvest as production had tumbled to untenable levels, plus there was unacceptable soil erosion. The well-defined bouquet is intense with yellow plum, Mirabelle, crushed stone and wilted white flowers. The palate is very well-balanced with superb tension, focused and energetic with a saline finish. Bowing out in style.Inc. VAT£189.72 -

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)
Bright yellow. The nose suggests a wine with terrific inner-mouth tension: yellow peach, white flowers, menthol, minerals and crushed rock. Fatter than the Vergers in the mouth, with a seductive orange zest sweetness throughout, but kept firm and bright by piquant minerality. Quite tight on the long, aromatic back end. More austere than the Vergers, and not showing the early balance of that wine.Inc. VAT£964.32 -
Burghound (93)
(Sweet Spot Outstanding) A notably ripe and moderately exotic nose combines notes of pineapple, tangerine, lychee nut and floral, citrus and matchsticks hints. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the intense and much stonier middle weight flavors that also possess even better detail on the notably firm if not really austere finale that delivers superb length. This is excellent and while I am in general not really a fan of exoticism, this manages to work particularly well.Inc. VAT£162.12 -

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has a minty/aniseed tinged bouquet that opens nicely in the glass. There is a very subtle reduction at play. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, and, again, rather reductive. But, there is plenty of matière in situ. Fine boned with a lightly spiced and reassuringly persistent finish developing more and more salinity with aeration. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting.Inc. VAT£774.72 -

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets 1er Cru has wonderful delineation and poise on the nose, real frisson, with yellow fruit, egg whites and wild peach. Love it! The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot 1er Cru is certainly more flattering on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jean at the moment, with ebullient red berry and blueberry fruit, well-defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There’s plenty of fleshy red fruit with cracked black pepper and allspice towards the finish. Maybe the Domaine's strongest red this vintage. Very fine.Inc. VAT£458.00 -
