    Gazin

Château Gazin is a relative large single block Pomerol estate. Their label design bears the Knights Templar’s cross due to a historic connection. After indifference in the 70s and 80s, major renovations in 1996 have lifted the quality dramatically. The estate shares a boundary with Château Pétrus, Château Lafleur-Pétrus and l’Evangile. In fact, in 1969 Gazin actually sold 5.5ha to Pétrus. Chateau Gazin shares one of the highest levels of elevation in Pomerol, along with Pétrus. At its peak, Gazin reaches up to 40.5 meters. Inside their single block of vines, their best terroir is perfectly placed close to the middle of their holdings, which sits on blue clay. It is clear that his terroir has the potential to produce Merlot-dominated wine at the very highest level.

Very good medium-deep color. Floral, somewhat high-toned aroma of crushed berries, licorice, smoke, chocolate and coffee. Smooth and flavorful in the mouth, with a lovely velvety texture and the density of the vintage. Finishes with a lingering, iron-like sweetness and fine tannins. A gently styled Pomerol, with no shortage of grip.

      Jeb Dunnuck (95+)

A straight up smokin’ red from this vintage is the 2015 Château Gazin and it’s a big, powerful, stacked 2015 that’s for those with patience. Made from almost all Merlot (I think it’s 100%), my notes on this beauty start - and end - with “love it.” Cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite, forest floor, and tons of minerality all soar from the glass of this sensationally rich, concentrated, medium to full-bodied 2015 that has building tannin, a seamless texture, and a blockbuster finish. Forget bottle for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following two to three decades.

    • Gazin 2020 (6x75cl)

      James Suckling (96-97)

This is really fantastic with so much intensity and focus. Firm, linear tannins frame the wine beautifully. Polished and fine. It’s full-bodied, yet tight and posed. Complex flavors of blackberry, black olive, mushroom and bark. Persistent finish. Best of the trilogy?

      (12x75cl) 2022

      James Suckling (97)

This is really fresh and refined with so much class for the vintage with blackberries, blueberries, violets and minerals. Some coffee beans. Medium- to full-bodied, this has ultrafine tannins and a long and persistent finish. Such balance and harmony for the vintage. Drink after 2030.

      (12x75cl) 2023

      James Suckling (95-96)

Very classy, with a crushed-stone and terra-cotta highlight to the blackberry, chocolate and hazelnut character. It’s medium-bodied with a personality that grows on the finish and delivers intensity and length at the end. Very long. Very structured. We will see which is better, 2022 or 2023.
