Domaine Ghislaine Barthod
Domaine Ghislaine Barthod
If you have the idea that Chambolle Musigny is a “feminine” wine, then Ghislaine Barthod's wines will not disappoint – delicate, pure and perfumed fruit with a core of intense minerality that will age beautifully over the decades. We call Ghislaine Barthod “The Queen of Chambolle”. Her cellar may be humble but her wines are full of splendour and charm.

Vinous (93+)
Subdued aromas of plum, chocolate, violet and crushed rock, with a slightly liqueur-like quality. Dense, sappy, superconcentrated and sweet; a remarkably solid wine with terrific chewy depth. The finish stains the palate with powerful tannins and minerality, but the fruit and tannins will need at a good 10 years to come into harmony. There were just four barrels of this juice, as opposed to a typical five and a half, due to the tiny, thick-skinned grapes. It should be at least a misdemeanor to open this wine anytime soon.Inc. (12x75cl) 2009Vinous (94)
Barthod's 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées is utterly impeccable from start to finish. It possesses tons of inner sweetness in a finessed, gracious style that is immensely appealing. A last burst of exotic red fruit frames the finish. The Fuées is flat-out striking.Inc. VAT£3,752.81 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a well-defined nose, perhaps one of the most mineral driven amongst Ghislaine-Barthod's range. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, vivacious and focused with lively red fruit and an exuberant finish that is very convincing. This Gruenchers transcends the growing season. Sublime.Inc. VAT£762.80 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers 1er Cru has a spicy bouquet that takes time to cohere in the glass. Dark cherries, pain d'épice and dried flowers unfold in the glass. The palate is perhaps the most marine-influenced of the cuvées. Rather foursquare perhaps: it's tightly wound and slightly conservative towards the finish, yet feels long in the mouth. Very fine…but you must be patient.Inc. VAT£1,452.80 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Mid purple, currently showing the oak a little more than some. Then more fruit fragrance develops, fine-boned on the palate, with additional energy further back. Something of a sleeper, heading in the right direction. Drink from 2032-2037. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£1,355.60 -

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which contains around 20% new oak, has a crisp black cherry and raspberry-scented bouquet, tight at first but fanning out with open arms upon aeration. The palate is just wonderful: super fine tannin, a killer line of acidity, a little crunchiness to the texture, but bestowed with immense purity on the finish. The saline touch completes one of the best village crus that I tasted during my visits.Inc. VAT£164.00 -

Barthod's beautiful 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village reveals an inviting bouquet of raspberries, red cherries, blood orange and espresso roast, subtly framed by classy new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and succulent, with a fleshy core of fruit, tangy acids and fine but chalky structuring tannins.Inc. VAT£1,373.80 -

Vinous (89-91)
My sample of the 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Village contained no new oak, but there will be 15% in the final blend. It has an effervescent nose that seems to spring from the glass with its ebullient red cherries and wild strawberry. The palate is full of crunchy red fruit laced with citrus peel, fine tension with a delineated, almost Morey-like finish. Very fine.Inc. VAT£123.59 -

(5 Star Wine) Mid purple. A very stylish perfumed Chambolle fruit of medium plus density. This is quite delicious in the mouth and seems relatively approachable. Raspberries and violets with a fine sense of precision, adequate acidity and very long. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted: November 2023.Inc. VAT£800.29 -
