Jonata
About Jonata
Founded by Charles Banks and Stan Kroenke shortly before they bought Screaming Eagle in 2006, Jonata is located within the Santa Ynez Valley and produces a range of wines readily showcasing their mastery of the Ballard Canyon AVA terroir. Choosing to plant Syrah, Sangiovese and Bordeaux varietals which were deemed unorthodox, Jonata has decisively shown that its 84-acre vineyard is capable of producing extraordinary results.
Matt Dees has been instrumental in the success of Jonata, and by extension, the rise of Ballard Canyon as a vinous region to be reckoned with. Having formerly worked for Staglin Family Vineyards in Napa Valley and Craggy Range in New Zealand, Matt’s wealth of experience has earned him the unwavering trust of Stan Kroenke. Nothing displays this more clearly than the fact that out of the three labels that Matt is working on now - Jonata, The Hilt and The Pairing - Stan Kroenke owns them all.

Vinous (92)
(93% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 2% petit verdot) Opaque ruby. Pungent cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by exotic floral and Indian spice qualities. Bitter cherry and dark chocolate flavors gain sweetness with air, fleshing out and carrying through a long, sappy finish. Manages to be lush and sweet but also poised, offering an impressive balancing act of tannins and ripeness. This has excellent hang time. This, too, is much more impressive than the maiden 2004 release.Inc. VAT£1,135.49 -

The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated cuvée is the 2017 El Desafio De Jonata, which includes 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. It's another inky colored wine from this team and offers a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, cedar, bay leaf, and crushed rocks. Beautifully concentrated and balanced, with a Bordeaux-like structure and regal style, it's a magical Cabernet Sauvignon that's going to benefit from 7-8 years of bottle age yet keep for 20-30 years.Inc.
