Maison Joseph Drouhin
The eponymous Joseph Drouhin founded the négociant company, which bears his name in 1880, having spent much of his early life in Yonne. His son Maurice took over in 1918, buying the first vineyards, including the famous Clos des Mouches, which we are delighted to offer below. An arduous process of expansion thanks to the nature of Burgundy’s patchwork of owners, Maurice was finally able to carve out quite the empire for his family, which endures to this day.
A titanic character in Beaune, Maurice both sat on the INAO committee and acted as deputy administrator of the Hospices de Beaune throughout the turbulent World War II. At the height of his powers, Drouhin even had exclusive distribution rights to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. However, he was unable to purchase a portion of the company, which subsequently went to Leroy.
His successor was his nephew Robert Jeausset-Drouhin, who took charge in 1957. Still maintaining a watchful eye over proceedings, Robert has ceded main control to his children (and fourth generation) Frédéric, Laurent, Philippe and Véronique. Philippe Drouhin manages the vineyards biodynamically, and as of 2009, their entire range has the ECOCERT organic certification.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92)
(from owned and purchased grapes; tasted from tank) Good deep red. Cool, subdued aromas of medicinal dark fruits, spices and mint. Sweet and pliant on entry, with licorice and mint flavors, then firm mineral-driven acidity energizes the back half and extends the finish. Finishes with good palate-saturating breadth and suave tannins. This seems ready to bottle.Inc. VAT£243.59 -

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has an open nose of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals, very pure and charming, and not dissimilar in style to François Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru. The palate is very harmonious, open and transparent. It feels lighter than others, yet the tension and precision will see this age with style, and perhaps it will not close down. Tempting now, but I would prefer to wait. Classy. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.Inc. VAT£627.12 -
Decanter (95)
This is a classic 'cuvée ronde', combining fruit from six different Premiers Crus to produce a stylish example of what Véronique Drouhin calls the 'cashmere of Burgundy'. Scented, balanced and ethereal, it's a transparent expression of Chambolle's range of terroirs, with sweet summer berry flavours and fine, velvety tannins. Accomplished stuff.Inc. VAT£585.12 -
Jancis Robinson (17.5)
Blend of six different premiers crus vinified together (10% not owned by Drouhin), I think Véronique Drouhin said, but certainly blended quite early to provide some commercial volume. Final blend in tank, to be bottled by mid February 2021. Quite a deep crimson. The nose is a bit introvert at the moment, but the spread of subtle fruit across the palate is stunning! Velvety texture. This would make an excellent teaching tool to communicate Chambolle's special sumptuousness. Long and rich on the finish. Pure flattery.Inc. VAT£634.78 -

Most of this fruit comes from domaine-owned parcels, but some is purchased. Six parcels in total contribute to this pretty, floral and silky-textured Chambolle. Sweet red fruits spread gently across the mid-weight palate before a light ganache note joins in and brings the wine into a gently fading finish. 2022-34Inc. VAT£809.52 -
Vinous - Neal Martin (91-93)
The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru comes from estate and purchased fruit, five or six different sources blended during vinification, and includes around 35% whole bunches. The bright bouquet offers dark cherries, wild strawberries, and hints of wild heather and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has pliant tannins, is quite harmonious, and has more dark fruit toward the finish, laced with dark chocolate and brown spices. Very fine.Inc. VAT£868.40 -

Rich fresh purple, quintessential Chambolle elegance, really fine as this cuvée so often is chez Drouhin. Perhaps even more sensual than usual in 2023, stretching out to a very long finish. Picked at the right time, ripe but not overdone. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Nov 2024.Inc. VAT£744.80 -

Good medium red. Musky aromas of raspberry liqueur, smoky oak and underbrush. Broad and mouthfilling, with sappy red fruit flavors enlivened by brisk but well-integrated acidity. Very pure and firm, but youthfully tight and in need of six or seven years of aging. Today it's the premier cru that sings.Inc. VAT£978.97 -

The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is wonderfully sweet, centered and polished. Silky tannins grace the palate as this exquisite wine opens up in the glass. The finish remains long, sweet and totally impeccable. The Amoureuses is always one of my favorites here, and the 2009 is gorgeous. Drouhin used 30% whole clusters.Inc. VAT£4,580.44 -

Tasted at the Chambolle Amoureuses vertical in London, the 2012 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has such a vivid color that sets you up for the wonderful, effervescent bouquet. Virile was a word that sprung immediately to mind, laden with animated maraschino and wild strawberry scents that are infused with plenty of mineralité, perhaps more than the 2010. The palate is medium-bodied and extremely cohesive. There is an effortless quality suffusing this Chambolle-Musigny, a sense of purity and transparency, while its satin-like texture will totally win you over. This is a beautiful wine. These domaine-owned vines average about 50 years in age. A few rows are even across the road, up against Musigny. As they say, it's a desirable neighborhood. Pretty cherry fruits mesh with kirsch on the nose. The palate is equally charming, adding crushed stone minerality to the mix. Sleek tannins and integrated, buoyant acidity focus the mid-weight palate into a lengthy, perfumed finish. 2024-40Inc. VAT£709.32 -

The 2014 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Baudes was picked on September 16 and includes 15% whole cluster. It has a very perfumed bouquet, refined and elegant with hints of violet and blueberry tincturing the red cherry fruit. The palate is crisp on the entry, a little tighter and sharper than the nose was implying and perhaps I was expecting a little more substance on the finish. Hopefully that will develop in time once bottled.Inc. VAT£1,910.64 -

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes 1er Cru has a very perfumed bouquet of brambly red berry fruit infused with pressed rose petal; touches of flint and bay leaf emerge with time. It seems to retract a little with aeration rather than expand. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and quite linear in style, featuring a liberal sprinkling of white pepper and clove toward the finish.Inc. VAT£700.32 -

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village showed just a little more reduction on the nose compared to Drouhin’s other Village Crus. The palate is compact and quite tight, delivering good weight but just missing a little amplitude. However, I do enjoy the sapidity on the aftertaste, and maybe it is simply biding its time. Give it a couple of years in bottle.Inc. VAT£516.72 -

Good dark red. Very shy nose hints at crushed stone, menthol, flowers and licorice. Then surprisingly round and charming in the mouth, with a distinctly silky, open-knit texture to the fat dark berry fruit. Not hugely complex but developing nicely. This should give pleasure early.Inc. VAT£1,824.07 -

Mid crimson. Scented and heady. Super charming. On the nose it’s almost Oregonian! But on the palate there is Burgundian structure. Still a clear framework and ambition; this is not a slack Charmes. Drouhin's 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing very well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of ripe cherry and berry fruit that mingle with nuances of espresso, dried flowers and grilled meats, all framed by some toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with a sappy core of nicely concentrated fruit, fine tannins and bright balancing acids. This is an elegant, racy Charmes-Chambertin that is somewhat reminiscent of the 2010 rendition.Inc. VAT£1,073.52 -

The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru exhibits aromas of red cherries, potpourri, citrus rind and creamy new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and expressive, with an exuberant core of succulent, mouthwatering fruit that largely conceals a fine-grained framing of tannin.
