Raen
About Raen
Raen’s founders and brothers Carlos and Dante share a surname with the single most influential and important North American icon of fine wine in the 20th century, and one which will be instantly recognisable to even the most casual of oenophiles – Mondavi.
Their grandfather Robert was a visionary beyond compare for what has become, for many, the most exciting vinous region in the world at this point in time. Their family arrived in the USA over a century ago from Italy and immediate grew to become vignerons of serious note. Sadly, prohibition put paid to the ambitions of a generation of the Mondavi family, but their seemingly inevitable destiny remerged in 1933 with its end.
Founded in 1966, the Robert Mondavi winery produced countless legendary wines before the family unexpectedly sold in 2004 with Robert, Carlos and Dante’s father Tim and the brothers of course choosing to expand into new projects. One such project, helmed and founded by the youngest generation of those is Raen, started in 2013 and already a serious player on the Sonoma Pinot Noir scene.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Sea Field is a transparent jeweled ruby color and takes things up a notch with its superb aromatics of ripe cherry, gravelly earth, and fresh rose petal. Medium-bodied, with sweet tannins and notes of ripe black raspberry and fresh herbs, it maintains a light sunny touch to its slightly darker profile. Drink 2025-20240.Inc. VAT£689.09 -

Spices and dried strawberries with stone and mineral aromas as well as sandalwood and oyster shell. Some orange peel and lavender. Full-bodied with layers of very fine tannins that have a firm and direct nature. It goes on for minutes. So structured with tannins that spread across the palate. Needs time to soften and open. Try after 2028.Inc. VAT£622.32 -

The 2020 Pinot Noir Royal St. Robert is a very pretty, nuanced wine. Crushed red berry fruit, mint, dried flowers, herbs and a kiss of orange zest all grace this mid-weight, beautifully perfumed Pinot. There is very slight touch of astringency in the tannin, but that is a very small critique for a Pinot that offers so much sensuality and pure class. This is an impressive showing from Raen.Inc. This is amazing on the nose with dried strawberries, sandalwood, mahogany and tea leaf. Iron and rust underneath the fruit. Dried flowers, nutmeg and rose petals. Full-bodied yet agile and energetic with layers of fine dusty tannins. Entrancing finish. Give this four or five years in the bottle, but it’s hard not to drink.Inc. VAT£415.24
