    Roagna

    About Roagna

Luca Roagna farms 12 hectares in Piemonte, made up of many different plots based in Castiglione Falletto in Barolo, plus plots in Barbaresco and the Langhe hills. He works the limestone soils organically (but is uncertified) and allows grass to grow between the rows, practising a no-till regime. The wines are made traditionally, with a natural ferment, a long maceration and a long elevage with modest levels of sulfur dioxide. The elevage is in large barrels of 2000–5000 litres, with the last part of ageing taking place in really old barriques.

The 2017 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is quite closed and austere, almost shockingly so. It will be interesting to see if more Asili sensuality emerges over time. For now, the 2017 is very obviously on the severe side, with good energy, but less through the mid-palate. Sweet dried cherry, mint, chalk and dried herbs linger.

Drawing its fruit from a leased vineyard in Neive, the Roagna 2014 Barbaresco Albesani opens to a medium ruby color with pretty garnet highlights. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, dried cherry, tilled earth and black licorice. There is much more aromatic intensity here than you might expect given the rather subtle and nuanced appearance the wine makes in the glass. The soils in Albesani are fundamentally calcareous, and these conditions add to the perfumed and fragrant qualities you get here. Production for this wine is 230 cases (of 12 bottles each).

The 2015 Barbaresco Albesani is gracious, floral and lifted, which is not common in Albesani, where the wines tend to be more powerful. Bright acids and lively tannins give the 2015 its shape and energy. This translucent, inviting Barbaresco has so much to offer.

The 2017 Barbaresco Albesani is delicate and ethereal. Crushed flowers, sweet dried cherry, cinnamon and orange zest give this deceptively light-bodied Barbaresco a good deal of both nuance and complexity. All the elements are so nicely balanced. All things considered, the 2017 is an understated wine from this Neive site.

Roagna's 2004 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is every bit as impressive as it was upon release, if not moreso. Still vibrant and explosive, the 2004 soars from the glass with a stunning bouquet redolent of crushed berry fruit, rose petal, tar, lavender and menthol. The 2004 is fabulous today. Amazingly it might still need a few years in bottle to be accessible.

The 2008 Barbaresco Crichët Pajé is a gorgeous, translucent wine that shows this cool, late-ripening vintage at its best. Sweet red cherry, mint, kirsch, hard candy and white pepper are all beautifully delineated. In many vintages, Crichët Pajé was massively tannic and forbidding. The 2008 is the most refined vintage of this wine I have ever tasted. Put simply, the 2008 is sublime. Even so, my impression, and hope, is that subsequent vintages will be even better.

Just bottled, the 2011 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is unbelievably refined. Sweet red cherry, rosewater, mint, dried flowers, pine and kirsch give the 2011 an upper register of perfume that is utterly beguiling. Silky and classy to the core, the 2011 is the most sensual Crichët Pajè I can remember tasting. There is plenty of tannin, that is clear, but it is also pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. This is such a gorgeous and complete wine. There is just an unreal amount of freshness for this dry, torrid year. Wow!!

The 2012 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is tight and not especially expressive today. In this vintage, the Crichët Pajè is a bit more floral and lighter in structure than it can be. Imagine Burgundy with Nebbiolo acids and tannins. Among other things, that means the 2012 will drink well with minimal cellaring, in relative terms for this bottling. Despite its reticence, the 2012 is also restrained and so nuanced. I can't wait to see how it develops in bottle.

Crushed mint, new leather, white truffle and wild berry aromas waft out of the glass on this gorgeous, fragrant wine. Smooth but seriously structured, the focused palate is delicious, delivering crushed Morello cherry, raspberry compote and licorice. Still youthfully austere, it needs several more years to fully develop but it will age and evolve for decades. An absolutely breathtaking wine.

The 2014 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is an absolutely exquisite wine that shows how compelling this vintage is in Barbaresco. Fresh, vibrant and wonderfully deep, the 2014 races out of the glass, showing tremendous depth, energy and pedigree. Crushed red-toned fruit, orange peel, rose petal, anise and mint are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop, but its really the wine's balance that impresses more than anything else. It's a super classic wine from Alfredo and Luca Roagna.

Yet there is a solid base of tannins too, a promise of this wine's future potential. Comes together on the fresh finish, where an echo of red fruit and emerging mineral elements linger. The 2017 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti (with a precious few 1,214 bottles made) is extremely fine, direct and linear with a quality of old-school Nebbiolo intensity that is hard to find in today's modern Barbarescos. The wine is silky and fragile in character with dried cherry, iris root and iodine. The Roagna house style shows very fine tannins, and you'll find those in this vintage too. The Montefico comes from vines grown in distinct blue-gray marl soils.

The Pajè vineyard is among the most calcareous in terms of soil composition within the entire Barbaresco appellation. The vines are 50 years old, and those six years of barrel and bottle aging are absolutely necessary. This plot is a little under two hectares in size, and this site has been in family hands since 1953. In fact, Roagna is releasing all its expressions from 2013 at the same time. Thanks in part to the relative youth of the vines (young I suppose only by Roagna standards), the 2013 Barbaresco Pajè's aromas are large in scale and generally more fleshed out. The tannins are also a bit more dry or astringent. The wine shows deep contrasts between the sweet nature of the bouquet and the very sharp nature of the mouthfeel.

A new wine, the 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Crichët Pajè is a tiny selection that spends an additional decade in cement and steel prior to being bottled. Wild and exotic, the 2004 is at once mature and yet so young. The closest analogy I can give is an older Champagne that has recently been disgorged. Dark red fruit, tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and pressed rose petals all lend tons of complexity. I can't say I have ever tasted anything quite like this.

    Vinous (96)

A new wine, the 2004 Barbaresco Riserva Crichët Pajè is a tiny selection that spends an additional decade in cement and steel prior to being bottled. Wild and exotic, the 2004 is at once mature and yet so young. The closest analogy I can give is an older Champagne that has recently been disgorged. Dark red fruit, tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and pressed rose petals all lend tons of complexity. I can't say I have ever tasted anything quite like this.
