The Mosel wine region follows the Mosel river from its source to where it joins the Rhine. The best vineyards are sited on steep south facing slopes which are very hard to cultivate but provide ample reward for that work in the end result of the wine. The two most prestigious areas for viniculture are the Saar and Ruwer. Here the excellent Riesling can be delicate but bursting with complexity.

Candied lemon and grapefruit rind, licorice, and white raisin add further complexity, and it is remarkable the extent to which one gives no thought to either the wine’s sweetness or its leavening acidity as such. Seamlessly rich, it seems to levitate over into its long finish, pulling out an amazing burst of sheer refreshment. I would anticipate this being well worth following for four decades. The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a discreet and sublime, complex and very elegant and slightly flinty nose with a coolish and very delicate expression of stewed apricots but also some greenish berries, whereas the first stony character remains. This irresistible and noble bouquet leads to a round and lush yet also refined and savory palate, with coolish apricot flavors on the long and sustainably salty finish that is firmly structured but elegant and highly stimulating. This is a superb, very elegant and complex, sustainably structured Sonnenuhr. The 2021 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett is deep and flinty but bright and clear on the refined and elegant nose with beautiful crushed slate aromas. On the palate, this is a rich, round and generous, incredibly lush and supple but crystalline and even pure Sonnenuhr with a highly stimulating, mouth-watering finish. This 2021 shows the great terroir of the cru, in particular in cool vintages due to its exposition that collects the sun's rays in the morning. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork.
