Vinous (92)Influence of botrytis has steered this bottling in a very dried-fruit direction, with purple plum, white peach and quince on the nose taking on a pasted impression on the palpably dense, glossy palate. There is also a delicate aura of raw mushroom. Licks of cinnamon stick and lime zest add to the vibrancy and tactile grip of a severely concentrated finish. This definitely needs some time. |

Wine Advocate (97)The 2019 Wiltinger Braune Kupp Auslese is very clear, refined and flinty on the elegant and subtle nose with its rose petal and wood aromas, similar yet even finer than in the Spätlese to be auctioned. On the palate, this is a piquant, fresh and grippy Auslese with racy acidity that cuts the sweetness and pairs with the mineral backbone of this refined and frisky Auslese. The salinity and piquancy are already exciting yet still nervous and youthful—this should be an extremely buoyant Auslese in 20 years. Bottled with 7.5% alcohol. Tasted from AP 7-20 in June 2020. |

Vinous (94)This auction lot opens with aromas and palate attack quite unlike those of the corresponding non-auction Auslese A.P. #6 and reflecting a prevalence of desiccated but botrytis-free berries. Lime and grapefruit figure prominently, along with lusciously ripe but fresh kiwi and white peach. A faint hint of white raisin adds appeal. The palate feel is seductively creamy, offering alluring contrast with the wine’s levity and fresh-fruitedness. The superbly sustained finish is transparent to a shimmering wealth of stony, smoky and saline nuances. |

Vinous (91)This sole Auslese bottling of the present Zilliken collection is dominated by white peach, quince, grapefruit and lime. Like several of its siblings, it is marked by both animatingly bright citricity and creaminess of texture – though here, at least in the wine’s youthful state, the two are a bit at odds with each other. Glycerol conveys an oily feel here as well, and the citrus elements turn zesty and candied in the finish, yet all without sacrificing primary juiciness. “We had as good as no botrytis,” noted Zilliken. “We’re talking here principally about perfectly healthy grapes that were lightly desiccated.” A half-bottle with a bit left in it that had been open for two months came amazingly close in quality to freshly opened one. “I’ve been following this open bottle with some surprise myself,” observed Zilliken, adding by way of explanation that there hasn’t been any point in serving the rest of it since the wine was immediately sold out and he doesn’t want to frustrate his clientele. Here’s a bottling with which one should be patient, though I seriously doubt that it will ever deliver quite the complexity or superb balance exhibited by its two Spätlese siblings. |
