Wine Advocate (97)

The 2020 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese ** (White Capsule) comes out pure and intense and with amazing finesse and complexity, reminiscent of ripe and warm stone fruit and chamomile aromas along with notes of almond cake and notes of weathered slate. On the palate, this is a spectacularly good two-starred Auslese with a concentrated but pristine texture but also refreshing phenolics on the saline finish. This is a sublime, nuanced and complex Riesling from one of the Mosel's most exciting vineyards where Molitor holds by far the majority. His 2020 Auslese ** is full of energy, tension and salinity, and dare I say, planet wine doesn't have that much to compete at this level of terroir expression and quality for a price of an incredible 40 euros ex-cellar. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine from AP 43 21 in July 2022.

Decadent wisteria and lily perfume mingles with apple jelly, marzipan, white raisin and caramel on the nose. The impression on the soft, creamy, expansive, viscous palate is similarly decadent and confectionary, with a hint of bruised apple skin serving for lightly oxidative enhancement such as was witnessed in the corresponding Wehlener Sonnenuhr. This finishes with seductively soothing persistence. A sense of sweetness that threatened at midpalate to become cloying has the courtesy to back off slightly. Any sense of citricity present here is of candied peel, and anyone who places a premium on nobly sweet Riesling preserving freshness, clarity and animation will find those virtues impressively displayed in Molitor Auslesen other than this one, impressive though it is in its own way.

Quince and apple jellies on the nose – headily wreathed with iris, heliotrope and lily – acquire a stimulatingly tangy apple skin edge as well as bright limey juiciness on the palate, which at the same time offers a custardy sense of dense, creamy richness. As with this wine’s superb Wehlener counterpart, textural richness and enormous concentration have not precluded buoyancy and even an airy sense of openness. This beauty finishes with terrific, vibrant persistence and a sweet-saline savor that veritably milks the salivary glands.

The 2021 Riesling Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese *** (Golden Capsule) offers a very clear and intense, savory, pure and elegant nose of concentrated fruits, including lemon and grapefruit aromas, intertwined with finely flinty notes of crushed slate. Round, lush and generous but also highly delicate and irresistibly savory on the palate, this is a balanced Auslese that is not as lively, bright and saline on the finish as the Wehlener, but it is more textured, richer and possibly also deeper. 7.5% stated alcohol. The 2015 Rubicon had been a source of contention prior to my visit, hailed by some respected commentators as one of the Cape’s greats and then almost pilloried in a contemporaneous blind tasting. It is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, each fermented separately before blending. It was matured for 18 months in 66% new oak and the remainder second-fill. So what do I make of the wine? It is clear in color with quite a deep core. The bouquet is refined and focused, offering attractive mint- and graphite-infused black and red fruit and perhaps leaning a little more toward the latter compared to previous vintages. With aeration, subtle touches of pencil shavings emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and quite velvety in texture, displaying very well integrated new oak. There is a satisfying sense of harmony to this Rubicon and it is certainly well constructed, but it does not possess that peacock’s tail on the finish that takes a very good wine to the level of great. Perfectly enjoyable, and it demonstrates very good winemaking; however, when compared to, say, the 2015 Paul Sauer, it just falls a little short. [I tasted this sighted and then in a mini blind tasting to confirm.]

The 2022 Stars in the Dark comes from Cape Agulhas, stomped underfoot with one-third whole bunches, aged in 3rd and 4th fill French oak. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grained tannins, extremely well-balanced with a precise, edgy finish, black pepper and black tea lingering temptingly.
