South Africa
At the bottom of its great continent, South Africa is a country of unlimited natural advantages. With the confluence of two oceans at the Cape, the sheltering effect of inland mountain chains and some of the most dynamic soils in the world, every piece is in place for the production of fine wine. The most well-known region has historically been Stellenbosch, but it is the wines of Swartland that have really turned South African wine on its head in recent years.
The wine industry is in the midst of a renaissance with classically styled wines making full advantage of remarkable terroir and an adventurous spirit. As a result, South Africa is producing some truly exceptional wines of great character and value. Striking blockbuster Syrahs and Bordeaux blends to full bodied Chardonnay and crisp Sauvignon Blanc are some of this great nation’s offerings. South Africa’s own grape, Pinotage, leaves critics divided yet can produce excellent single-variety offerings as well as distinguished Cape blends.

The 2015 Rubicon had been a source of contention prior to my visit, hailed by some respected commentators as one of the Cape’s greats and then almost pilloried in a contemporaneous blind tasting. It is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, each fermented separately before blending. It was matured for 18 months in 66% new oak and the remainder second-fill. So what do I make of the wine? It is clear in color with quite a deep core. The bouquet is refined and focused, offering attractive mint- and graphite-infused black and red fruit and perhaps leaning a little more toward the latter compared to previous vintages. With aeration, subtle touches of pencil shavings emerge. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and quite velvety in texture, displaying very well integrated new oak. There is a satisfying sense of harmony to this Rubicon and it is certainly well constructed, but it does not possess that peacock’s tail on the finish that takes a very good wine to the level of great. Perfectly enjoyable, and it demonstrates very good winemaking; however, when compared to, say, the 2015 Paul Sauer, it just falls a little short. Lean and fragrant, very slightly meaty in a light-touch way, rooibos tea, fynbos, biltong, nectarine skin. A slightly crazy collision of flavours but it works. [I tasted this sighted and then in a mini blind tasting to confirm.]In Bond£180.00 -

Lean and fragrant, very slightly meaty in a light-touch way, rooibos tea, fynbos, biltong, nectarine skin. A slightly crazy collision of flavours but it works. And then, in the mouth, held, the spices begin to build. Fine spice. The tannins hum with spice. It tastes like rain and it tastes like red apples and it tastes a little like a lick of rust and its savoury with driftwood tannins. Ultra-elegant. The tannins fill my mouth like a suspension bridge in the mist. This Sam Lambson makes wine … VGVIn Bond£141.00 -
(6x75cl) 2020Minimalist Wines Experimental Red 2020 is a quietly uncompromising Elgin red from the Cape South Coast, South Africa, shaped by the cool-climate tension for which this high, wind-cooled valley is prized. True to the Minimalist philosophy, the wine is presented as an exploration rather than a formula: fruit-first, then technique kept deliberately discreet, allowing site character to sit at the forefront. In the glass, Minimalist Wines Experimental Red shows a savoury, finely drawn profile with fresh red-berry fruit, lifted herbal nuance and a mineral edge, finishing with measured tannin and vivid acidity. The overall impression is of restraint and precision rather than excess weight, making it particularly compelling for collectors who value detail, transparency and evolution in bottle. Serve lightly cool and follow over time; it rewards patience as structure and perfume knit together.

It may have been a hard vintage, but damn, this is beautiful. Soaring, floral, sweet and salty and saturated with blood and juice and pulse and thrum. Bacon and cello. Tannins like rose petals. Rose harissa and baharat. Dark cherry and damson fruit. Soaring and glorious. A triumph. In Bond£175.00 -

The 2022 Stars in the Dark comes from Cape Agulhas, stomped underfoot with one-third whole bunches, aged in 3rd and 4th fill French oak. The red fruit on the nose seems to "hug" the olfactory senses, very pure and beautifully delineated, an underlying mineralité gaining momentum with aeration. The medium-bodied palate has fine-grained tannins, extremely well-balanced with a precise, edgy finish, black pepper and black tea lingering temptingly. This continues Lambson's strong run of form and comes highly recommended. In Bond£170.00 -

Smells spicy, medicinal, wintergreen and balm. Taffeta texture to those tannins with a splice of cumin and iodine, coffee and chicory. Rose hips. The fruit is like a soft kiss, almost breathy, barely there. Sam Lambson is like the John Sargent of Syrah winemakers, somehow capturing the intricacy and intimacy and power of colour and light in the most transparent, light-touch way possible. Despite the tight, tight finish, the wine seems to float. I wouldn't rush to drink this now, although it would be difficult to resist. In Bond£145.00 -

The 2020 Essence is the Mullineux's first release of this cuvée since 2012 and comes from the last fraction to come out of the press, comprising pure Chenin Blanc that took 30 months to ferment. It is beautifully defined and surprisingly discreet with marmalade, rose water, quince, apricot, and just a slight chlorine scent on the nose. The palate is unctuous as you would expect and delivers….drum roll…650g/L residual sugar with effortless style. The 12g/L acidity upholds freshness and prevents it from becoming cloying and, yes, very Tokaji-like on the slightly tangy finish. Decadent and slightly outrageous. Available only in 250mL bottles…so don't go asking for jeroboams. In Bond£85.00
