Navazos releases a super-old wine from time to time, and this time it's the turn of an Amontillado from Montilla-Moriles, produced with Pedro Ximénez grapes and sourced from the Pérez Barquero winery. It's presented as NV La Bota de Amontillado 73 “Bota Aniversario.” These old wines are always very concentrated and powerful, and the challenge here is to find one that is balanced. A similar wine was bottled as La Bota 26 to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the project, but it was never sold and instead was used for gifts for the core of Navazos customers from the bota 1. That 26 was taken from the bota 'No', and this 73, in order to not empty cask number 8 (the bota 'no'), was blended with cask number 3. Despite being bottled with some 21% alcohol, this wine is supposedly not fortified, and the alcoholic degree is achieved by pure evaporation and concentration through old age. This is getting the character of a very old wine, with hints of rusty nails and noble woods, a volatile touch and lots of nut notes. The palate is powerful, with volume, sharpness, elegance, intensity and a very long finish with echoes of low tide and rusty nails. A unique wine. 1,100 half bottles produced.Inc. VAT£484.16 -

The cooler and more austere 2014 Espectacle del Montsant could have some similarities with 2008. It has beautiful floral aromas and hints of orange peel and wet stones. It has a serious, balanced and austere palate, a closer expression of Espectacle, with contained ripeness and an earthier, more mineral finish. It's very different from 2015, which is possibly a more classical expression of the vineyard, while this 2014 is quite unique and different. But I like this austerity very much. Around 6,000 bottles were filled from one 4,500-liter oak foudre. It was bottled in May 2016.Inc. VAT£528.43 -

The 2015 Espectacle del Montsant is a ripe and classic vintage for this exceptional wine produced from a single vineyard in Montsant. This has a forward personality—open, expressive and showy in the nose—from a typically warm and ripe year that resulted in a voluptuous and hedonistic Espectacle that's easy to like. It's rounder and lusher than the 2014 I had next to it, and the two vintages showed very different. The palate is also gentler, with integrated acidity and a soft mouthfeel. Some 6,000 bottles were filled in May 2017.Inc. VAT£528.43 -

The floral, aromatic and citrusy 2016 Espectacle del Montsant has unusual finesse and freshness. It's a powerful Garnacha that feels light on its feet but with great inner strength, refined tannins and great acidity. There is no oak, extraction or excess ripeness whatsoever, but the label says the wine is 16% alcohol! It has structure, freshness and that citrus touch that supports the alcohol, and the wine comes through as really balanced. This is a unique wine, always with the aromatic signature of this north-facing vineyard and the limestone soils that provide those chalky tannins and a dry, tasty, almost salty finish. 6,500 bottles produced.Inc. Deep, sweet dark-cherry fruit forms a solid foundation for this impressive wine. The nose of the 2016 Clos Santuy was a little more discrete and reticent than the 2016 Villages. This comes from a 1.2-hectare plot of ungrafted vines in the village of Piquera de San Esteban that somehow was left out of the Ribera del Duero appellation. There is a sense of harmony and depth unlike that of the Villages, which felt more open and immediate. The palate is pure rock, austere and chalky, with a sense of minerality that was striking. It's approximately 80% Tempranillo and 20% Albillo fermented together with 20% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in one 225-liter barrel and one 600-liter demi-muid for 22 months. 1,095 bottles were filled in September 2018.Inc. The nose of the 2016 Villages was stunning. It's a blend of Tempranillo with 9% Garnacha and 4% white Albillo from vineyards in Piquera de San Esteban, Fuentelcésped, Hontangas, Cuevas de Provanco, Quintanilla de Onésimo and Trigueros del Valle. It fermented by soil types with indigenous yeasts and some 20% full clusters (the Garnacha was 100% whole clusters) and matured in a mixture of 225-liter barriques, 600-liter demi-muids and 1,200-liter foudres for 21 months. The élevage was very respectful with the wine, which comes through as floral and terribly aromatic, ripe without excess and with a medium to full-bodied palate, pungent flavors and great length and persistence.
