One of the greatest wines of the year is Ulysse Collin’s NV Blanc de Blancs Les Roises (2018 base) 72 months, largely based on the 2018 vintage and incorporating some 20% reserve wines from 2017 and 2016. Originating from a south-facing site, it was disgorged in February 2025 with a dosage of 2.4 grams per liter and bursts from the glass with a flamboyant bouquet of orange oil, peach and blanched almonds mingled with notes of struck flint, pine resin and linden blossoms. Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with a textural attack and a compelling sense of completeness, it culminates in a long, sapid finish. Simultaneously expressive and incisive, it exhibits a harmonious balance between all its components and an uncommon degree of concentration for the vintage. That is hardly surprising, though, given the old-vine, massal-selection Chardonnay planted in 1949, which produces small-berried clusters weighing just 70 to 95 grams—hardly an abundance of fruit and an advantage of no small significance in a year such as this. Tasted blind, one would be inclined to associate this wine with the quality attained with the 2015- or 2016-based renditions than with any of the stereotypes of the 2018 vintage, a reminder of just how misleading generalizations in wine can be.Inc. The palate is medium to full-bodied yet weightless, with angular tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, salty finish that just keeps building. This magical wine shows how good Merlot (and Sonoma) can be and offers extraordinary notes of crushed violets, spring flowers, scorched earth, graphite, black cherries, and crème de cassis. As elegant and seamless as they come, it’s full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has an incredible spine of acidity and tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. The myth perpetrated by Old World wine proponents is that California wines don’t age. Those critics need to taste Verité, because these wines are aging far slower than I imagined. The 2005 La Joie (67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec) tips the scales at 14.7% alcohol. It received the same 18 months in 100% new oak. It is interesting that Pierre Seillan said that he thought the high-elevation vineyards of Sonoma that go into Verité (self-serving, os course) are his greatest sites in the world for Bordeaux varietals. But remember – he’s from Bordeaux! This multidimensional wine, which enjoyed a 4-5 day cool, pre-fermentation maceration, has a provocative bouquet of blackberry, cassis, new saddle leather, Christmas fruitcake, graphite and high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco. It is profound, extremely full-bodied and massive in the mouth, but not heavy or astringent in any way. This is perfection in a glass, and a tribute to what Sonoma can achieve. A deeper red hue with light garnet at the rim, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Montosoli is absolutely gorgeous on the nose, with saddle leather, ripe cherries, amaro spice, blood orange, and a savory earthy character that feels distinctly of the site. The palate is medium to full-bodied yet weightless, with angular tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, salty finish that just keeps building. Including the highest percentage of Merlot (at the moment anyway), the 2016 La Muse checks in as 93% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Malbec that spent 15-16 months in roughly 90% new French oak. This magical wine shows how good Merlot (and Sonoma) can be and offers extraordinary notes of crushed violets, spring flowers, scorched earth, graphite, black cherries, and crème de cassis. As elegant and seamless as they come, it’s full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has an incredible spine of acidity and tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. Deep ruby-purple in color, its aromas unfold slowly and offer new nuances with each return to the glass: Morello cherries, warm chocolate, dried thyme, desiccated roses and dried herbs. The myth perpetrated by Old World wine proponents is that California wines don’t age. Those critics need to taste Verité, because these wines are aging far slower than I imagined. The 2005 La Joie (67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 7% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec) tips the scales at 14.7% alcohol. It received the same 18 months in 100% new oak. It is interesting that Pierre Seillan said that he thought the high-elevation vineyards of Sonoma that go into Verité (self-serving, os course) are his greatest sites in the world for Bordeaux varietals. But remember – he’s from Bordeaux! This multidimensional wine, which enjoyed a 4-5 day cool, pre-fermentation maceration, has a provocative bouquet of blackberry, cassis, new saddle leather, Christmas fruitcake, graphite and high-quality unsmoked cigar tobacco. It is profound, extremely full-bodied and massive in the mouth, but not heavy or astringent in any way. This is perfection in a glass, and a tribute to what Sonoma can achieve.
