This full-bodied, powerful yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon couldn’t be better and has incredible purity, layers of crème de cassis, white flowers, tobacco leaf, and flowers, a deep, multi-dimensional texture, and loads of ultra-fine tannins. I’d confidently put this up against any Cabernet Sauvignon in the world. As with the La Muse, it has the balance, purity, and class to drink spectacularly well even today, but it’s another wine that will benefit from a decade of cellaring and keep for 40-50 years.

On the palate, more cassis and blackberry come to the forefront. The wine is unctuous, with adequate acidity and a stunning energy underneath the massive fruit and body. This is a spectacularly fragrant and, at the same time, dense wine, with enough structure (somewhat surprising in this vintage) to last 35-45+ years. The final blend was 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec.

This magical wine shows how good Merlot (and Sonoma) can be and offers extraordinary notes of crushed violets, spring flowers, scorched earth, graphite, black cherries, and crème de cassis. As elegant and seamless as they come, it’s full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has an incredible spine of acidity and tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. It has the class and purity to drink well even today, but it’s not going to hit prime time for at least another decade and will keep for 3-4 decades. Bravo!

Pierre Seillan believes the Chalk Hill fruit provides a truffle-like character and the Alexander Valley gives minerality, structure, tannin and intensity. The 2008 will be fascinating to taste next to the 2007 over the next 30+ years. Sweet mulberry, blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with notions of black truffles, damp earth and forest floor emerge from this beauty of stunning intensity, purity and texture. The alcohol is 14.4% and the relatively elevated pH is 3.76.

    Very dark, full, near saturated black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is tight and concentrated with rich and sweetly ripe aromas of black berried fruits and black plums with a fine and integrated amalgam of black pepper, and black and violet florals, unveiling subtle layers of spicy and nutty oak and nuance of iron-earth. This is beautifully proportioned and refined in expression. Medium-full bodied, the fruit is tightly bound but clearly rich and succulent, showing flavours of ripe blackberries and black plums with hints of blueberries along with liquorice melded with black pepper, iron-earth and subtle black florals. This has a concentrated core with linear drive and energy, the fruit balanced by fine-grained, significant tannin structure and fresh, integrated acidity. The wine flows with textural finesse and succulence, leading to a long and sustained, vibrant finish. This is a concentrated Syrah with ripe black fruits along with complex black pepper and iron-earth nuances balanced by fine structure.

    The 2010 Barolo Ravera is one of the greatest wines I have ever tasted from Vietti. Stunning. It's as simple as that Freshly cut flowers, mint, spices, crushed rocks and pine jump from the glass in a vivid, crystalline wine endowed with captivating purity, clarity and finesse. The 2010 takes hold of the palate and never lets up, gaining body, breadth and volume over time. A breathtaking, perfumed finish rounds out the finish. The Ravera represents a bit of a stylistic departure for Vietti and a return to a more traditional style of winemaking. The 2010 was done entirely in cask, with minimal racking. In its early years, it was virtually impossible to taste as the reductive winemaking style gave a wine with closed aromatics and searing tannin. Today, the 2010 is beginning to blossom into an epic Barolo. The 2010 Ravera may well be the single greatest Barolo Luca Currado has ever made. It is also a wine that, along with the Barolos of Elvio Cogno, show just how much potential the hills of Ravera have to offer. Readers who can find the 2010 Ravera should not hesitate. It is a legendary, benchmark Barolo in the making. As an aside, a bottle of the 1999 I tasted last year was extraordinary, and it was made in the slightly more modern style that was typical at Vietti during that era.

As elegant and seamless as they come, it’s full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has an incredible spine of acidity and tannins, and a finish that won’t quit. Pierre Seillan believes the Chalk Hill fruit provides a truffle-like character and the Alexander Valley gives minerality, structure, tannin and intensity. The 2008 will be fascinating to taste next to the 2007 over the next 30+ years. Sweet mulberry, blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with notions of black truffles, damp earth and forest floor emerge from this beauty of stunning intensity, purity and texture. The alcohol is 14.4% and the relatively elevated pH is 3.76.

    Very dark, full, near saturated black-hued purple-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is tight and concentrated with rich and sweetly ripe aromas of black berried fruits and black plums with a fine and integrated amalgam of black pepper, and black and violet florals, unveiling subtle layers of spicy and nutty oak and nuance of iron-earth. This is beautifully proportioned and refined in expression. Medium-full bodied, the fruit is tightly bound but clearly rich and succulent, showing flavours of ripe blackberries and black plums with hints of blueberries along with liquorice melded with black pepper, iron-earth and subtle black florals. This has a concentrated core with linear drive and energy, the fruit balanced by fine-grained, significant tannin structure and fresh, integrated acidity. The wine flows with textural finesse and succulence, leading to a long and sustained, vibrant finish. This is a concentrated Syrah with ripe black fruits along with complex black pepper and iron-earth nuances balanced by fine structure.

In its early years, it was virtually impossible to taste as the reductive winemaking style gave a wine with closed aromatics and searing tannin. Today, the 2010 is beginning to blossom into an epic Barolo. The 2010 Ravera may well be the single greatest Barolo Luca Currado has ever made. It is also a wine that, along with the Barolos of Elvio Cogno, show just how much potential the hills of Ravera have to offer. Readers who can find the 2010 Ravera should not hesitate. It is a legendary, benchmark Barolo in the making.
