  • Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts Vv 2010 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

Bright, deep red. Sappy aromas of medicinal cherry, plum and spiced bread. Lush, seamless and intense, with sweet dark fruit flavors energized by powerful minerality and limestone lift. In a distinctly virile style, this wine saturates the palate on the very long, sappy finish. I'd give it seven or eight years in the cellar.
  • Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts Vv 2013 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2013 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru les Beaux Monts Vieilles Vignes has a well-defined, mineral-led bouquet with lifted, perfumed blackberry and kirsch scents, hints of limestone just underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, slightly sappy black cherry and raspberry fruit leading to a harmonious and svelte finish. This is a little more structured than the Aux Brûlées at this stage and will probably require a little more bottle age.

  • Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts Vv 2016 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

(a bit more east-facing than the Brûlées and thus sheltered from the afternoon sun; the soil is calcaire with a lot of clay and sand, similar to that of the Hauts de Beaux Monts; 30 hectoliters per hectare produced): Bright medium red. Very airy scents of raspberry, cherry, fresh herbs, mint and cinnamon; smells like a pastry. Then a bit less taut than the Brûlées, showing little in the way of easy sweetness but also displaying less inner-mouth tension than the Brûlées. Finishes solid and dry, with a firm spine of masculine tannins, but here the acidity is more reserved. Clavelier describes this wine as having a quiet force.

Good medium red. A sexy truffle note adds interest to the aromas of raspberry and cherry, with hints of herbs and mint providing lift. Wine Advocate (88-90)

The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées had a more floral bouquet in the making, nicely defined, just a touch of reduction to get through at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry and raspberry fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity, but just needing a little more precision to come through on the finish. If that transpires, then it will certainly deserve a higher score, but I will be prudent for now.

  • Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanee La Combe Brulee 2015 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

(25 hectoliters per hectare; this massale selection was harvested at the end, on September 12): Bright medium red, a bit less saturated than the Hauts de Beaux Monts. Very reduced aromas of strawberry and rose petal show a a freshness from this parcel's cooler exposition and combe influence. In a distinctly juicy, penetrating style but still with the silkiness of the vintage. Strawberry and raspberry fruit flavors are extended by pungent mineral and floral elements on the classically dry finish. In a juicy, lighter style but with no shortage of density.

  • Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanee La Combe Brulee 2016 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (88-90)

Bright medium red. Nose dominated by raspberry and pungent gunflinty calcaire. A step up in intensity from the Hauts de Beaux Monts (there's no clay in this soil) but tighter and more saline in the middle palate, offering hints of flowers and olive along with noteworthy mineral tension. Finishes sapid and long. Clavelier uses cordon de royat pruning for these very old vines and because they bud later he was able to keep a bit more crop. Still, there was a good bit of millerandage and production was just 17 hectoliters per hectare.

The 2013 Vosne Romanée Hautes Maizières comes from more clay soils than the La Combes Brûlées, and has dark berry, mulberry and red plum notes on the nose, bashful at first but opening with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, slightly grainy in texture, with a slightly foursquare but nicely focused finish. Give this 12 to 18 months once bottled.

  • Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

This is a difficult wine to find in the marketplace and it is rarely presented for official review. In fact, the last time it was produced was way back in 2008. The 2014 Barbaresco sees fruit sourced from the lower part of the Asili cru with some smaller amounts from Rabajà. This is a very opulent and rich expression with forward determination and power. This is an unusual vintage with a cool summer and a very warm pre-harvest period. It produced interesting wines specifically in Barbaresco and almost nowhere else in Northern Italy. The quality of fruit is ripe and a touch sweet. Its texture is succulent and soft. The wine feels like it could be ready to drink now, but it also has the pedigree and beautiful inner structure for long cellar aging.

  • Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano 1993 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 1993 Barbaresco Santo Stefano is a perfect wine to start the evening, as it introduces a number of themes without being so serious or important as to be overpowering. Sweet tobacco, leather and a host of fully mature, tertiary notes give the wine its distinct personality. There is plenty of depth to the fruit, but the aromatics are fully tertiary. For that reason, any remaining bottles are best finished off sooner rather than later.
  • Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Albesani Santo Stefano 2001 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94+)

I am shocked (pleasantly, I must say), by how closed the 2001 Barbaresco Santo Stefano is. Powerful, tightly wound and totally closed down, the 2001 exudes class. Orange rind, tobacco and smoke add striking aromatic complexity to the intense dark fruit. Today, the tannins are surprisingly intense and raw, so readers will have to be patient. The 2001 is superb, but the wine’s full personality will not be on display for at least another few years. There is a good bit of upside here.
