Dark red. Knockout nose offers raspberry, strawberry, rose petal, orange peel, graphite, tobacco, minerals, mint and woodsy underbrush. Large-scaled, compellingly sweet and deep but not at all heavy. Concentrated, sappy flavors of wild red fruits are complicated by a whiff of leather and firmed by strong minerality. As huge as this is, it offers great vibrancy and precision, even elegance. In its vertical and horizontal dimensions, this stunning wine is almost too big for the mouth. Finishes with palate-staining persistence and kaleidoscopic flavors of red fruits, minerals and leather. Cerbaiona's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the protagonists of the vintage. There is no denying the sheer beauty and focus of this wine. It makes a fabulous first impact with super sharp tones of wild berry, cola, balsam herb, flint and crushed oyster shell. Those drying mineral notes leave a lasting impression. In the mouth, this wine is super elegant, tight and delicately nuanced. Unfortunately, I have not had the best track record with aged Brunello from Cerbaiona (ten years or more) personally, but I am hopeful that a wine of this caliber and depth will restore my faith. No matter what the aging trajectory ultimately demonstrates, this wine certainly does taste fantastic at this young stage.Inc. VAT£1,007.15 -

Cask sample 1: Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Still a little progress, but finer on the nose than the 2012. Subtle cherry and a hint of tea leaves. Proper Burgundian in style, think Marroneto but with added ripeness. Spectacular balance and ends on austere tannins. This just needs more time but is already exciting. Cask sample 2: A shade deeper. More slumbering and with a little more concentration on the nose than cask sample 1. Intense, ripe raspberry and oatmeal notes. Juicy and almost a little racy, and with firmer tannins than sample 1, and a touch bitter at this stage. Shares breed and elegance with no 1, even if the tannins are more upfront. Yet the length and elegance are impressive.Inc. VAT£671.98 -

Ceretto's classic 2017 Barbaresco opens quickly and nicely in the glass. That playful accessibility is a trait that I found in many of the Barbarescos from this vintage. Compared to the two vineyard-specific expressions (Asili from Barbaresco and Bernadot from Treiso), this wine offers broad brush strokes of wild berry, spice, licorice and iron ore. That's exactly the mission of this wine: It provides an authentic portrait of a grape. Fruit represents a blend from various sites, including young vines from Asili and the lower parts of Bernadot. The 2014 Barbaresco Bernardot has shut down since I last tasted it about nine months ago. The breadth that is typical of this Treiso site comes through, but the 2014 is quite reluctant today. The 2015 Barbaresco Bernardot is laced with sweet red cherry, kirsch, mint, cinnamon and wild berry. The natural ripeness of 2015 makes the Bernardot easy to drink young, even if there is a good bit of tannin that could use more time in bottle to soften. Here, too, the current Ceretto style that emphasizes mid-weight structure is quite apparent. Time in the glass brings out the more virile side of Barbaresco in a wine that expresses the myriads shades of contrast that make Nebbiolo such a fascinating grape.Inc. VAT£526.69 -

This is a beautiful creation from a vintage that threw quite a few challenges at vintners elsewhere in Italy and here in Piedmont. The Ceretto 2017 Barbaresco Bernadot plays up its elegance and its graceful personality. With fruit from an organic and biodynamic 4.8-hectare site in Treiso, planted high at 400 meters above sea, this pretty Barbaresco reveals very specific aromas of wild berry, light spice, licorice and iron rust. These aromas are essential components of the classic Nebbiolo playlist, as is the lightweight, silky texture of this wine. The Bernadot is natural and effortless (aged in mostly neutral oak).Inc. The natural ripeness of 2015 makes the Bernardot easy to drink young, even if there is a good bit of tannin that could use more time in bottle to soften. Here, too, the current Ceretto style that emphasizes mid-weight structure is quite apparent. Time in the glass brings out the more virile side of Barbaresco in a wine that expresses the myriads shades of contrast that make Nebbiolo such a fascinating grape. In Bond£421.00 -

The Bernadot is natural and effortless (aged in mostly neutral oak).In Bond£350.00
