Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has an outgoing, generous bouquet of sensual red cherries, crushed strawberry and veins of blueberry that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a dash of white pepper on the entry and slightly honeyed in texture toward the finish, betraying the warmth of the summer. It’s a close call but I just prefer the Clos Saint-Denis this year.Inc. VAT£1,225.92 -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a beguiling bouquet of pure dark cherry and violet aromas, quite mineral-driven and wonderfully delineated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine grip, and touches of graphite and white pepper toward the sustained finish. This feels cohesive and long, and it should age with style for 20–30 years.Inc. VAT£935.15 -
(6x75cl) 2020Vinous (94-96)
The 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a more powerful and demonstrative bouquet compared to Jadot’s Clos Saint-Denis with layers of blackberry, boysenberry and raspberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of graphite on the entry, lightly spiced, perhaps sans the same precision as the Clos Saint-Denis on the finish, a hint of peppercorns on the aftertaste. Still, this is very fine and quite noble.Inc. VAT£1,555.49 -

Vinous (91-93)
The 2017 Volnay Clos de la Barre 1er Cru (where half the vineyard was planted in 2011) has a perfumed, generous bouquet of ample ripe red cherries, wild strawberry and subtle brine-like aromas that are very well defined. The palate is ripe and fleshy on the entry, offering good depth and flesh, with layers of raspberry coulis, crushed strawberry, fig and white pepper toward the ample, persistent finish. Superb.Inc. VAT£433.92 -
Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)
Medium to deep purple, beautifully ripe, so much going on, plump lush raspberry but never losing its thread, more character in this warmer vintage rather than drying it. This is a very good Clos de la Barre, as good as I can remember. Tasted: November 2021Inc. VAT£354.72 -
Jancis Robinson (16.5+)
Pale garnet. Friendly and sweet on palate entry with good structure. Dry finish. It’s all there to enjoy. Though it will never be a blockbuster … thank goodness! Decent length.Inc. VAT£436.32 -
(6x75cl) 2010Vinous (92-95)
(from a yield of just 20 hectoliters per hectare): Bright, dark red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, mocha and cocoa. Dense, dry and sappy, with terrific intensity and inner-palate lift to the flavors of dark berries, black cherry, minerals and bitter chocolate. For all its concentration, this boasts outstanding finesse. Terrific tightly coiled wine with superb back-end perfume. The noble tannins are in perfect harmony with the wine's material.Inc. VAT£1,788.29 -
Vinous (89-91)
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is cut from a more elegant cloth than usual. The bouquet is nicely defined, offering perfumed dark cherry, cranberry and orange blossom aromas. The palate is crisp and well-defined on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, and quite linear and correct – toward the finish, I begin missing the sensuality and voluptuousness that I expect from this Premier Cru. Hopefully it will gain some weight once in bottle.Inc. VAT£1,167.20 -
(6x75cl) 2019Vinous (92-94)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is elegant and surprisingly understated on the nose, like a couple of other growers’ this year. It takes time to unfold and reveal crushed strawberry, blueberry and violet aromas, plus a little graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and quite generous, and sleek toward the finish. This is a classy offering.Inc. VAT£835.24 -

The 2021 4 Kilos is beautiful, perfumed, elegant, nuanced and subtle with floral notes, Mediterranean herbs, red berries and a spicy twist. It's expressive, open and fine-boned, with a moderate 12% alcohol and a velvety palate. This is medium-bodied, delicate and precise, very much in line with the 2020.Inc. VAT£211.84 -
Crafted from the exquisite vineyards of Margaux, France, the 9 de Marquis de Terme 2014 is a testament to the art of winemaking. This harmoniously structured Margaux blend comprises primarily of Merlot with suave accents of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot presenting a delectable medley of plum, blackcurrant and spice nuances. Cultivated under the regal label of Château Marquis de Terme, a historic fourth growth estate in the Bordeaux region, this wine embodies centuries of French winemaking expertise. The 9 de Marquis de Terme 2014 is diligently aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, eliciting a veil of smoky elegance that frames its robust fruity core. Its formidable structure gradually unveils in the glass, expressing a seamless fusion of opulence and finesse. Savour this tantalising gem as it even more beautifully unravels in the cellar over the coming years. A toast to the epicurean pleasure that is the 9 de Marquis de Terme 2014.

The 2019 Raaigras, pure Grenache including 15% stems, has a vibrant bouquet of red cherry and strawberry scents, demonstrating a little more presence than Badenhorst’s other reds. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, crisp red berry fruit and a liberal sprinkling of white pepper. The whole bunch addition lends more presence and density compared to other cuvées from Badenhorst, and there is superb length. The standout this year.Inc. VAT£118.13 -
Tim Atkin MW (94)
Made with what Adi Badenhorst assures me is the oldest Grenache vines in the Cape, planted in 1952, this is a reserved, focused, dusty red with very little oak influence, understated grip and concentration, brooding minerality and plum and red cherry fruit. 2023-28Inc. VAT£87.59 -
Vinous (93)
The 2021 Grenache Raaigras comes from vines planted in 1952, fully-destemmed and fermented in conical concrete vats. With dark cherries and raspberry coulis on the nose, this feels very cohesive with light slatey notes becoming more prominent with time. The palate is well balanced with a little chewiness on the entry, white pepper and touches for garrigues towards the persistent finish. Excellent.Inc. VAT£88.13 -
(6x75cl) 2005Vinous (93)
Opaque purple color. Intensely perfumed nose displays spicy dark berry and floral character, with zesty minerals and black tea adding complexity. Pliant blackberry and cherry flavors are impressively fresh, becoming deeper and sweeter with air. An admirably balanced wine, playing depth against vivacity and finishing with outstanding clarity and length. This is the most elegant example of this bottling I've tasted.Inc. VAT£709.33 -
Vinous (90+)
Bright purple. Pungent, intensely perfumed nose displays black and blue fruits, violet, Indian spices and a lively, peppery note. Sweet and lush on entry, then smoky and intense in the middle, offering brawny blackberry and mulberry flavors and suggestions of bitter chocolate and cracked pepper. Ripe but fresh, with a juicy, long finish that features notes of smoke and blackberry. This is pretty powerful for the vintage and deserves some patience.Inc. VAT£162.53 -
Vinous (92)
(100% tempranillo, aged for 24 months in small French and American oak barrels): Opaque violet color. Ripe dark berry, cola and floral aromas, with a strong accent of incense. Fat, sweet and palate-staining, offering intense red and dark berry preserve flavors lifted by juicy acidity. Powerful yet comes off as quite graceful. Finishes very long and sweet, with supple tannins and persistent spiciness.Inc. VAT£124.13 -

The 2013 Aalto is a lighter wine, with less color, more freshness as it should be in a cooler vintage. It has a bright color which also denotes high acidity. The year was not easy and they had to work more on the origin of grapes: it has less from La Horra and more from La Aguilera, a cooler village, both in the province of Burgos, because in La Horra they had more frost problems. It's aged in less than 30% new barrels and the oak feels better integrated, definitively less oaky than other vintages. The nose has a combination of red and black fruit, spicy aromas and a sense of freshness, with even some violets. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with very fine tannins, abundant but well padded by juicy fruit, good acidity and freshness. This is a lot more fluid and balanced, with better-integrated oak than in the past. This is a fresher Aalto that should age nicely in bottle. 175,000 bottles were filled in July 2015 after 18 months in barrel. 2013 has delivered the freshest bottles of Aalto so far, a lighter regular Aalto and one of the best PS to date.Inc. When I tasted it, the 2016 Aalto had already been blended and taken out of the barrels, waiting to be bottled in a couple of weeks. It's still young and tender, with peachy aromas, a little creamy and with a soft palate where the tannins are fine-grained. In 2016, they used more vineyards, grapes from their own plots and others purchased from suppliers. They expect to fill some 280,000 bottles in late June 2018. 2016 was a higher-yielding year that provided fresh and balanced wines. It should age nicely. Javier Zaccagnini has left the Aalto project to focus on his solo project Sei Solo. So, this time I tasted the wine with Mariano García.Inc. VAT£100.00 -
Wine Advocate (94)
The 2017 Aalto was a surprise for the vintage. They had to select the grapes from their own vineyards, and they produced less wine. It feels a little lighter and fresher, more approachable at this point in time. The oak also seems to be more integrated. It's a very drinkable Aalto in its style. They only used some 20% new oak and possibly did a softer vinification. It's approachable now, but it should also develop nicely in bottle, as the year had more acidity. 220,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2019.Inc. VAT£89.20 -
(1x150cl) 2018Wine Advocate (94)
The 2018 Aalto reflects the cooler conditions of the year, with a more austere profile, subtle aromas and a harmonious palate. This is a classic example of modern, ripe and well-oaked Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, which this year feels creamy, juicy and balanced. This follows the path of 2017 with integrated oak (they used only around 20% new oak) and a lively palate in a more drinkable and approachable style. They added some new vineyards from the zone of Boada where the soils are red and the wines bring freshness and lots of fruit. The wine had a shorter maceration with the skins and a softer vinification. This is finer and more balanced, with finesse but still very much recognizable as Aalto. 300,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2020. They have a new white first produced in 2019 and a non-vintage red blend to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the winery. They are also going to release small lots of library releases. The 2018s reflect the cooler year and show more integrated oak, following the path of the 2017.Inc. VAT£106.67 -
