  • Antoniotti Odilio Bramaterra 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2017 Bramaterra is wonderfully deep and generous. There is a bit less nuance and delineation than in most vintages as well as slightly coarse tannins that give the impression the 2017 needs a few years to soften. Time in the glass brings out lovely inner sweetness in the dried red cherry fruit, tobacco and cedar flavors along with a real feeling of weightlessness. The 2017 doesn't match the best years here, but it comes close.
  • Anwilka 2017 (6x75cl)

A seductively perfumed vintage, the aromatics show alluring notes of violets, potpourri and hits of lily over dark bramble berry fruits with hints of mocha espresso notes that combine with subtle buttered brown toast nuances. The palate shows fabulous elegance and finesse with a soft touch concentration of black currant, Christmas pudding, savoury plum compote and black cherry. The tannins are powdery and fine grained but also structured and drying, combining well with a fresh glossy acidity that keeps the finish focused, vibrant and bright. • Ao Yun 2018 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (98)

I love the depth and complexity of the nose, which brings you down deeply into the wine, showing blackberry, ink, tar, earth, incense, cloves, and black licorice. Thyme, too. The purity of the fruit, including cassis, is the real thing. This is full-bodied, but remains so fresh and vertical on the palate. The tannins are so fine and integrated, producing a millefeuille-like layering of tannin and cool, blue fruit. Incredible wine. The greatest wine made in China so far. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 7% syrah and 4% petit verdot. 26,000 bottles made. Drinkable now, but will be so much better in four or five years.

Very scented, complex and layered with a classy nose full of ripe currants, smoke and sweet tobacco leaves. Graphite, charcoal, exotic herbs and cigar box. A hint of black truffle and tapenade, too. Full body with fine, silky tannins that highlight the juicy aspect of this wine. Dusty tannins gradually build up on the palate in a crescendo, following through to a juicy, precise and lengthy finish. Super-polished and refined. There is still cabernet verticality on the palate. The finest Ao Yun so far? It has a finish that lasts almost two minutes. 67% cabernet sauvignon, 17% cabernet franc, 10% syrah and 6% petit verdot. This is a blend of 23% of Xidang village, 21% Sinong, 32% Shuori and 24% Adong. Already drinkable now, but should hold until 2026.

Super classy, fragrant nose that immediately brings demureness with its currants, graphite, paprika, cigar box, tobacco leaves and a touch of cocoa powder. This is a juicier expression of Ao Yun on the palate, with lots of brightness and probably a little less weight and opulence than 2019, but certainly more agility, firmness, tension and freshness. Refined, layered, long and silky, but the tannins are fresh and present. Extremely long and nervy. The best Ao Yun to date that zeroes in on balance. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 10% merlot, 6% syrah and 5% petit verdot. 30% new barrels, 30% old barrels and 40% stoneware jars from Sichuan. • Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2015 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95+)

This is a terrific wine and one of the new releases from Montalcino that I happily include on a short list of top recommendations. The Argiano 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a very lively bouquet that is already singing despite the young age of this new release. The wine opens to a dark ruby color with garnet highlights. The bouquet shows a large span of wild berry, earth, licorice spice and medicinal herb aromas. This vintage also reveals a pretty floral character with dried rose potpourri and lavender buds. After fermentation, the wine is aged slowly for 30 months in large oak botte (including 10-, 30- and 50-hectoliter capacity), thus restricting oxygen and gently slowing its evolution. However, the 2015 vintage is naturally expressive and exuberant, and that's the main takeaway here.

Aromas of red and black currants, black licorice and fresh garden herbs. Full-bodied with fine, decadent tannins that run the length of the wine. Widescreen on the palate with lovely openness, but still retains some exciting tension. Very different mouth-feel than previous vintages. Textural at the finish. Very nicely structured. Best after 2025.

  • Ao Yun 2019 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (98)

  • Ao Yun 2020 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (99)

Drink from 2025, and the wine should age beautifully for the next two decades, if not longer.

The Argentiera Bellamarsilia Morellino di Scansano 2018 is a quintessential representation of Italian winemaking excellence. Crafted by the esteemed Argentiera Winery in the Tuscany wine region, this exceptional red utilises predominantly Sangiovese grapes, blended with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The fermentation process takes place in lined concrete vats, allowing for softer, more refined tannins. Upon tasting, you'll find sensuous layers of red berry fruit, tobacco, and spice, underscored by a delicate, lingering acidity. Through careful maturation in new French oak barrels, the Argentiera Bellamarsilia Morellino di Scansano 2018 attains an unparalleled balance of fruit and wood. The Argentiera estate is notably the highest and closest to the sea in the Bolgheri amphitheatre, which bestows a remarkable salinity to the wine. A bright red color, the 2022 Bellamarsilia is 100% Sangiovese raised in stainless steel. It’s fresh on the nose, with notes of bright red cherry, saline, fresh orange, and red flowers. On the palate, it’s refreshing and medium-bodied, with fine tannins, a clean feel, refreshing acidity, and a clean finish. A very charming wine from the only appellation of Sangiovese in Tuscany that touches the sea, it has a refreshing salty nature and is perfect for pastas or pizza night.

  • Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2015 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2015 Argiano Brunello di Montalcino Riserva lifts up with a vibrant and spicy display, showing bright cherry and strawberry with mentholated herbal tones, crushed stone and a hint of white pepper. It takes a more savory turn on the palate, as silky textures usher in tart red and black berries, laced with salty minerals. Nervous acids add further tension, while grippy tannins slowly saturate, leading to an intensely structured finish. The 2015 Riserva will need a good amount of time to soften, and I don’t believe its fruit component will be able to keep up.
